Both get to run again for something next year - Owens succeeded in not winning the state Senate seat held by Sonia Chang-Diaz, while Garrison met expectations in not overtaking state Rep. Evandro Carvalho.

The Dorchester Reporter alerts us that the perpetual candidate has sued Secretary of State William Galvin for barring her from the Democratic ballot for Carlos Henriquez's old seat on the grounds she didn't switch from being a Republican to being a Democrat in time this time.

SHOCKING UPDATE: The Secretary of State's office rules Garrison will not be on the Democratic ballot, because she changed parties too late..

The Dorchester Reporter runs down the list of candidates for Carlos Henriquez's now vacant Fifth Suffolk seat. Good news for fans of perpetual candidates: Both Althea Garrison and Roy Owens are among the six to file papers to run.

And the gloves come off in what had been a fairly genteel campaign. Rob Consalvo wants Democrats for Education Reform to back away from Boston. In a letter to the head of the Washington-based group, which is now pouring money and volunteers into an effort to get John Connolly elected, Consalvo writes:

We don't know where that money comes from, but we know it comes with one purpose: to further your agenda. ...

Among the qualifiers: Charles Yancey, who is pulling a Paul Ryan by also qualifying to run for re-election as a city councilor, you know, just in case. The other city councilors running for mayor are all in just for mayor.

Blackstonian posts the list of the candidates who turned in enough signatures to qualify for the preliminary ballot this fall.

David Portnoy of Barstool Sport, of course, had said all along he's running for El Alcalde, but Yancey, the city's longest serving district city councilor, had played coy all along. Also making the cut: Robert Capucci, along with several other people.

The Globe's Andrew Ryan tweets that the first person to take out papers for mayor today was Althea Garrison. She now needs to collect 3,000 signatures to get on the preliminary ballot.

Althea Garrison handily lost tonight to embattled state Rep. Carlos Henriquez, which means she retains her lead for most consecutive elections without a win over Roy Owens, who sat this election out.
