Rather than have the former tire store on Boylston Street in the Fenway sit empty until the financial picture improves, developer Steve Samuels has leased it to the Marshall's Farm Stand people from Gloucester. Next door is a new fitness gym, CrossFit Fenway. Marshall's has the best thing ever for an in-town farm stand: on-site free parking. Grand opening Saturday.
GREAT idea -- welcome, folks. And thank you, Steve Samuels.
Also of interest on the neighborhood development scene, vanshnookenraggen over on ArchBoston.org has an illustration of his suggestion for the placement of a renovated Yawkey Station, which has come up for earlier discussion on UHub. Seems it's currently on a somewhat challenging section of track. (Click top right of the photo for the ArchBoston discussion thread.)
And it's heavy equipment time for Mickey D. The lot at the corner of Boylston and Jersey Streets is now a pile of fast-food drive-thru residue. (Yeah, ok, that's the one in Newington CT -- same difference.)
Like the job UHub is doing? Consider a contribution. Thanks!

So whats the deal, this site isn't going to be redeveloped after all (a la Trilogoy/1330)? I mean, the NIMBYs will have a lot more to harp about with this Farm Stand thing in the way.

There is a planned building for the site, but with the economy in shambles financing isn't going to happen. The leases are for only three years with the option to extend or be relocated within the neighborhood thereafter.
The red building pictured here:

Is what will eventually be on the site.

Samuels & Associates already owns the property. Long-term plans for its redevelopment have the city's and the neighborhood's support. Once market conditions justify construction, it will proceed.
Meanwhile, here's another, temporary use that benefits nearby residents, visitors and businesses (e.g. the LMA, which is all in favor of vegetables and physical fitness).
Win-win.

Thanks -- that's from when the arches and other signage came down last spring. Now the building itself is being leveled, as the next stage of its karma-journey transformation into a parking lot. Just for the time being, until, you know, the economy turns around. Meanwhile, the owner of this property is open to other ideas for off-season use, as well.
Thanks

Fenwayguy,
Thanks for spreading the word about CrossFit and the Farm Stand. I couldn't be more excited about building my gym in Fenway, I even live in the Trilogy apartments next door to it. All are invited to our Grand Opening this Saturday. We'll be doing demonstrations of our unique style of training at 11, 12 & 1. We'd love to have a huge neighborhood turnout.

Thanks for the welcome, fenwayguy! Samuels and Associates have been great to work with and they were very enthusiastic about bringing in vibrant young startups that will really enhance the neighborhood. They're still planning to develop the property eventually - and we hope to be with them "on the ground floor" when that happens.
CrossFit Fenway is holding a two-part Grand Opening this Saturday, December 12, along with Marshall's! We'll be running exercise demos and free raffles during the day, and after dark we've got some special treats planned. Come on by and say hi - introduce yourself as the website guy so I'll know you. :)
