Now THAT was a storm

We got caught in it as we drove along the Fens: Frequent, vivid lightning flashes, rain coming down in sheets, people just walking slowly because they'd gotten to that point where they realized they were so soaked trying to rush was pointless.

And only 15 minutes earlier, we were busy enjoying a rainbow right over Faulkner Hospital.

Jim Storer was out jogging when the storm hit:

The last half of the run was either exhilarating or terrifying, depending on the moment. Flashes and crashes were happening every 10 seconds or so, some closer to me than others. I consciously ran on the side of the street with the shorter trees, convincing myself that was the smart thing to do (is it?). With about a mile to go there was a strike so close I saw the blue light in my face and the the lightning struck a tree about 100 yards away.

The scene in Chinatown, by JJ Leslie. Jeff Cutler videoed the rain on 128:

lightning struck a house very close to mine in Savin Hill on Belfort St.

I was just preparing to leave the house for work when I heard the loudest noise I have ever heard in my life. I go in the other direction to the T, but my girlfriend walked right by it on her way to work. She told me the chimney was in pieces and some windows broke/fell out. Paramedics were apparently on their way as she got down the street.

I'm still a little jittery from the thunderclap on that one. Incredibly loud.

Hey Jeff Cutler - how about when the weather is crazy and you can't see you put down your iphone and keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road? It's one thing to be stuck in non-moving traffic and take a picture, but driving in torrential rain on 128 and filming the sky looking for lightning strikes (even for 1:27) is pretty irresponsible.

I wonder if this is why the internet seems to be down around Roslindale? (Though mine wasn't working last night either.) Verizon DSL is down at my house, and Select Cafe's isn't working either...argh.

I'm typing this on my Verizon DSL up in the foothills along the Hyde Park frontier.

Our service has actually been up continuously for the past couple of weeks, ever since the nice Verizon guy (who fortunately looked absolutely nothing like the FiOS Guy, because FiOS Guy deserves to be punched, not that he would ever deign to step foot in Boston) took pity on us and did some amazing amount of splicing and wiring and stuff inside the house, with the result that we now have a modern connection from the modem all the way to the outside of the house, rather than relying on the 1930s wires and past amateur efforts to extend the phone lines around the house (only some of which I'm to blame for, so there).
