Or are they getting it from suppliers already that old?

And if so...why were the suppliers unable to sell it for so long?

Why is BPS buying expired food which couldn't be legally sold in supermarkets?

If it isn't good enough for the public to buy in stores, why is it good enough to buy it with the public's tax money and served to children in schools?

It seems like a supplier found the perfect scheme to dispose of otherwise worthless warehouse spoilage on our dime. The fact the product is being fed to children only adds insult to injury.

THE FACT BPS HAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE ARRANGEMENT IS EVEN MORE INSULTING.

Yeah, that's right - it's a nefarious conspiracy. Shadowy forces seek to poison the yoot's of America with past-date frozen tacos.

According to WebMD, frozen food is safe indefinately:

But, sheesh, long expired food is a sign of poor planning (the Globe had a pic of frozen beef with an expiration date of Nov. 2009). Shudder to think how rarely the freezers are cleaned.

I suppose it's conceivable that the plastic containers with the food may degrade by the "expiration date" and leech into the food.

That's typically why plastic water bottles have an expiration date.

Does this need to be the lead story on WBZ?

Do City Councilors need to be spending time on this?

What is more important than:
1. how City money is being used, and
2. how that money is being used to feed children.

Adequate nutrition is linked to learning ability.

for not doing enough about crime in Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury. As ketchup was a vegetable to Reagan, Menino can boast of feeding aged cheese to his school kids.

I mean, it is probably okay, aside from freezer burn and nutritional degradation ...

Obviously, city counselors do need to spend time on this if they are tasked with educational issues - it could just be bad storage practices, but it could also be that the city is getting ripped off buying otherwise unsalable food. Don't you want to know why they are doing this? Why nobody else seems to care? Whether this results from "bargain shopping", neglect/incompetence, or somebody getting paid not to notice?
