Massachusetts and seven other states today sued the Department of Education for abruptly terminating two nationwide programs that funded teacher training programs for areas facing critical teacher shortages.
The grants, which would have funded a new UMass Boston program focused on bilingual education - and a program at UMass Amherst to train more teachers for "high need" Springfield and Holyoke - were simply rescinded with the snap of a finger by Trump's toadies at the Department of Education under the guise of battling woke and DEI, according to the complaint, filed in US District Court in Boston by Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New York and Wisconsin.
But that, among other things, violates the Administrative Procedures Act, which requires federal agencies making massive changes to detail their reasons and to give affected parties and the public a chance to comment first, the states charge.
The states are seeking, at a minimum, a temporary restraining order to require the government to pay out on its obligations while the case proceeds.
