As if the snake will respond when called

I think that giving the name is almost automatic for someone talking about their pet - after all, to them it is an individual.

And practically speaking, if there are people present who know about "Penelope the snake" if/when she is discovered, it might avoid an unfortunate freakout. (Many) people are afraid of creatures, but are intrigued by celebrities - even scaly ones.

Helpful as ever.

FWIW, Penelope is probably fine wherever she is despite the cold (look up "torpor"). That said, I'd check around any under-seat heating vents on the car she was last seen on, and she'll probably be snuggled up next to, or possibly in, one of those.

If people's pets are so beloved, how do they get lost in the first place? I like my umbrella and I've never left it on the T, and it's not even alive.

And not being alive it doesn't have the ability to slither away from you.

I think this is a hoax. A three-foot snake is HEAVY, not something you wouldn't notice was suddenly not around your neck.

Joey Ammo suggests a corn snake.

Joey Ammo is right, even though he seems to have trouble keeping his pets alive and is rather confused about ball pythons (they are constrictors, which are a particular category of snake, but they are NOT "boa constrictors," which are a specific species of snake entirely different from ball pythons.)

Corn snakes make excellent pets - they're beautiful (especially nowadays when there's a huge variety of color morphs available), not fussy eaters, don't get very big, and have placid temperaments. If I had snakes again I would definitely go for corn snakes. However, I wouldn't take them on the T, at least not without putting them into some kind of secure container, because that's just dumb.

I'm actually the cousin of Melissa & people don't seem to understand how much Penelope means to her & her husband. They've had her since she was less than a week old & she is like their child. They've taken the time to really make her comfortable around people. I personally hate snakes, but I've held Penelope & never been scared. She's such a sweet animal, so if you come in contact with her don't be afraid. All we want is her safe return to her loving parents! Thanks for any help!
