Beware the toxic pond scum

Warning sign about blue-green algae at Jamaica Pond

The city posted these signs all around Jamaica Pond yesterday after confirming a bloom of toxic blue-green algae - warning people to stay away from the water and keep their dogs far away as well.

The scum seemed particularly bad right around the boathouse and gazebo:

Pipe and blue-green algae

No boating at the pond today - or anytime soon, since even after water tests show the stuff has dissipated, health officials will wait two weeks before declaring the water safe again.

I feel bad for the folks who run the boating program - 2+ weeks of lost revenue, plus lost income for the young people who have summer jobs there.

And I hope the signs about no dogs in the water and no fishing are also being posted in Spanish to match the regular signage at the Pond.

A little birdie tells me that because that boathouse is part of a larger organization, Courageous Sailing, they are moving their youth sailing classes to their Charlestown location, and keeping on all of the teenagers and college students that work there. While the lost revenue is sad, especially during their busiest time of the year, at least they are doing the right thing and keeping their kids programs running and finding work for their staff!

I went for a run around the pond yesterday evening around 5:30 and there were still a lot of people fishing all around it. I saw one ranger suggesting to someone fishing that he "probably shouldn't eat" whatever he caught. Also saw people letting their dogs swim. In general it didn't seem like anyone knew what the risks were.
