Now that's a book we'd read. Lynne watched a firefighter dealing with an icicle on Beacon Street on Beacon Hill today before it fell on somebody's head.

Ice removal cost?
By onelith

How much does the owner of this property pay for this service? I just walked past a large condo building in Southie that had someone with a steam pressured hose up on a hydraulic lift melting a large ice dam above an entrance to the building. When asked about the cost the worker said "over a thousand".
Pay For Service

I agree that they should pay, but it become a public safety and trying to find someone to do the work is next to impossible. A five story building at the top of Beacon would require not only permits but a police detail, it isn't just the money, it is the red tape. I wonder if the Beacon Hill Architectural would want to call a meeting for this historic ice dam.
Agreed...

In this case this is indeed a public safety issue. Mostly likely this thing dislodged not too long for the BFD was called. It would be one thing if it were still hanging and a proper contractor was called and set up time for removal but in a case like this the owner would never find someone to get there fast enough to properly stage and remove the ice, so the fire department is actually the most logical choice rather than have it fall and injure or kill someone on the street below.

Ah.... There are thousands of buildings in and around Boston with larger icicles hanging from rooftop gutters, I guess the home owner had requested a fire truck to remove icicle, what s waste of tax payer money, why could'nt the bulding owner dish out $ to remov icicle,, im sure if he or she owns a building in the back bay they must have deep pockets .
Unbeleivable!!!

I saw a woman lifting and carrying a stroller with her baby inside the stroller this morning, walking over icy sidewalks in East Boston, I could'nt beleive my eyes, a much older woman walked passed me in disbelief , she says to me" the city is responsible in removing the snow on every public sidewalk, they own it" the city is liable if that young woman slips and falls with that baby. "That would be an aweful tragedy".she said.
So instead of using tax dollars to remove ice from a millionaire's back bay home, this proplem in Eastie is one of many in Boston's heavy populated neighborhoods. and it should be addressed before someone gets badly hurt or accidently killed.

I live in Eastie and agree for the most part, but there is a slight difference between a homeowner not shoveling their sidewalk and a homeowner not removing a 50 lb+ icicle from the roof. In Eastie (and many other areas aroun it City), it's a case of absentee landlords not caring about their building and not bothering to shovel (and I believe they should be fined to the max and/or sued if someone does get hurt on an unshoveled sidewalk). Even though I shovel and salt my sidewalk, I still can't remove a behemoth icicle like that on my own. And also keep in mind the City has been removing icicles in Eastie too...

Mrs Rockerfeller: Yes, I need your help, I need to remove ice from my building.
BFD: Madam, we don't service people with an ice

Mrs Rockerfeller: I will call the Mayors office if you don't show up with a ladder truck.
BFD: Go ahead Madam call the Mayor.
Mrs Rockerfeller: Hello, is this the Mayor..
