Came for the deadly algae, stayed for the giant white fish
By adamg on Tue, 07/21/2015 - 10:13am
As I walked around Jamaica Pond this morning, I spotted the Leviathan: The fabled giant white carp of Jamaica Pond. It moved at a stately pace along the bank (near that weird bench you can't actually sit on) before slowly turning and moving into deeper water.

What else does this explain?
Did somebody fall in last year and come out as the Boston Yeti?

Is the algae also dangerous...
... to this (and the other fish) in Jamaica Pond?
It can be.
The state of Virginia has a handy little page.

What's more interesting is the cause.. a nutrient overload. Probably dog crap in this case. It accumulates and then a major rain carries it into the pond. It's kind of funny that dogs are now at risk there like some karmic payback.
Nutrient overload
I'm going to guess it was spring lawn fertilization time for the upscale homes in the area near the pond and all the excess found its way into the water.
BPHC spokeswoman says ...
Gums!
This is the sob what ate the white squirrel. Or else took off Cap'n Ahab's leg.

So Jamaica Pond is now
gentrified...
Goose poop
I blame goose poop for over fertilizing the pond. How much can those things poop! It's everywhere. & unfortunately my dog loves to eat it so she's on a tight leash down there. I've never seen dogs pooping in the water either. Maybe we can blame gentrification… How about global warming! We haven't had much rain this season. and it is a pond after all. Stagnant and what not.
repeal the leash law
And you won't have geese there any more.
This story is so JP...
...even the fish is white and self-propelled.
Be careful what you fish for...
Jamaica Pond, where the fish are (most likely) mercury-free and algae-full. Mmm-mmm.
