This was the closest sit down restaurant with alcohol to our house in Fort Hill. We had high hopes and went a few times, but everything about the place was mediocre. The place was clearly struggling.
A shame, as they had a great location, nice layout, and they did a beautiful job repurposing old church doors and pews into the bar and seating. Hopefully something quickly replaces it and they keep the gorgeous bar. Unlikely given the sorry state of our liquor licensing system, but I can dream.
To be brief, we were heading in the right direction and ran out of time. In October we turned a corner and moved on a great pathway to success, but the earlier losses were too great to carry us through to a point where we could be profitable. Given our recent trends over the past few months, we would see gains by the beginning of 2016, but we ran out of sustainable cash.

Great homemade potato chips, a lot of other good plates even though it was a little uneven. Too bad-- I agree with the above comment that they probably got hit with the winter weather, but they also probably weren't distinct enough from Canary Square. Unfortunate, as the best dishes I had at Sanctuary were better than Canary Square.
We enjoyed their extensive beer selection and just hanging with the bartenders watching the Bruins. We tend to sit at the bar (when there is one) when enjoying restaurants.
I saw the cleaning guy show up this morning as I was walking the dog (as I often did). At first I figured they didn't tell him/his company, but then I suspect they wanted the last cleaning done so critters don't take over.
It is a shame, I don't like seeing restaurants fail. They had interesting takes on hearty fare, some I thought worked and some I didn't. And I agree - their chips were delicious. I hope everyone lands on their feet.
sanctuary was a nice place to have a drink and some food. it's a shame they're gone. comparatively, canary square's service is utterly lacking. the later evening bartenders at sanctuary were always beyond friendly and congenial. i'm sad to lose them.

Surprised they survived as long as they did

We liked it
That's a bummer. We had good experiences there the handful of times we went. Likely this winter didn't help their bottom line.
They ran out of cash
