Simco's, 1509 Blue Hill Ave. in Mattapan Square, goes before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday for permission to extend its closing time from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m.
The venerable hot-dog stand, which years ago had later hours, got a one-day suspension last fall when a police lieutenant found it open at 1:45 a.m. one August night.
The board's hearings start at 10 a.m. in its eighth-floor hearing room in City Hall.

One of my favorite meals of 2014 was from Simco's.

I'm a fan of some years: http://thephoenix.com/boston/food/92515-simcos-on-... Farewell party for a brilliant chef who was leaving town, someone you wanted his last meal in Boston to be on the mark.
We got a bunch of chili dogs, a lot of fried seafood, some fries and onions rings, went to a nearby park, cracked open some cans of Tecate, and basked in the weekday, noonday sun. Simco's delivered on what it does. Our friend could not have been happier. A really fine moment.
Great Idea

A legendary eating establishment in the minority community serving a diverse crowd at 3pm, who can object !

like all those perfectly orderly, polite, genteel white people spilling out of the clubs at 2am in the Theatre District. Why can't those minorities behave like *them*?
Hmmmm.

Three things that I love / miss from where I grew up:
-Fish Fry
-Hot Dogs
-Beef on Weck.

I live in Kelly's territory, which is good in a pinch, but, well, have had better.
Having grown up with the likes of Louie's, Ted's, and Old Man River, am really, Really missing a good Foot Long or Texas Hot. (No comments from the Peanut Gallery, Please!)
Simco sounds like a good reason to take a trip South.

hot links, among many other brilliant sausages, cold cuts, and charcuterie. I just came home with an armload of bologna, a couple of kinds of salami, and some Spanish-style chorizo. Here's my review from The Improper.
I certainly would love a good beef on weck here, too. All-Star and Bleacher Bar both make a respectable run at it, but nothing beats a kummelweck roll from a Buffalo bakery.

I know of Moody Street in Waltham, as well as the Falafel Palace in Central Square. Thanks for your review, as I couldn't place the place you're talking about.
Yes: All Star's beef on weck is good, albeit pricey.
Are you going to be frying up some of that bologna? That's one of my biggest guilty pleasures. Well, that and kishka. Back when my Mom was still around, she'd mail me one for my birthday every year. (Buffalo Foods dot com ).

You are breaking my heart, Sir.
I bought a bit of smoked kielbasa today at Stah, because it was on sale. My plan for tomorrow's breakfast (as I don't have to go to work then) is to make sausage and pepper omelets on either biscuits or flatbreads.
Any other places for Beef on Weck?

Where else around the Boston metropolitan area are Beef on Weck prepared the traditional Buffalo NY way?...

I wish I knew, Pan Theszak.
When I want that for a party, I just order from Redlinski's in Buffalo, then prepare the stuff myself.
I'm told that there used to be a big Polish population in Chelsea and Dorchester, and that, if one was lucky, one could find proper kielbasa (both fresh and smoked) at the Chelsea MB. Maybe the clues are in those areas?
When I'm really craving something, like smoked herring or Moo Cow caramels, I head out to the Russian stores in Allston. Back when I lived in that neck of the woods, also really liked the kosher butchers on Harvard Ave Brighton / Brookline. Haven't been to those places in a Long Time.
I keep a sharp eye out for beef on weck (and devote

more time to matters of restaurant food than the average person), and All-Star (Inman Square) and Bleacher Bar (Fenway) are the only two in Greater Boston I've run across. One issue is that the kummelweck roll is only good for one day; all that salt on top makes them turn soggy fast. I've learned the hard way that they don't even survive very well through a flight from Buffalo to Boston.
Any Boston metropolitan area bakeries offer Kummelweck ?...

Charlie the Butcher’s Kummelweck Buns
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine the salt and caraway seeds in a small bowl. Dissolve cornstarch in warm water. Put cornstarch mixture a small saucepan, then stir in the boiling water. Return the mixture to a boil and cook, stirring over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, until it is thick enough to coat a spoon. Remove from the heat and let cool. Place rolls in a baking sheet. Brush the top of each roll with cornstarch mixture, and then sprinkle rolls with salt and caraway seeds. Bake for 4 to 5 minutes or until the tops of the rolls are dry. Makes 12 buns. (Recipe is at it appears in “Roadfood Sandwiches” by Jane and Michael Stern, Houghton Mifflin, 2007) http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/food_din...
