Looks like last night's snow/sleet/rain was the last straw for Boston buildings. We've had a partial roof collapse on Columbia Point and a complete building collapse in Readville. And now this: Cars are being flattened by killer death ice. Kristin MacDougall forwarded this photo of a car flattened like a pancake by snow that fell off a building on 3rd Avenue in the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Ted the roving UHub photographer, meanwhile, reports a BMW parking on Brimmer Street on Beacon Hill was peeled open like a can of tuna by a giant icicle that fell off the Greek consulate this morning:

"Good thing there wasn't a kid in that child seat in back!" he concludes.

Gutters full if ice, and facia, fell off length of my condo onto neighbors' 2 cars in driveway below. I feel so bad. They are on a cruise so I can't even reach them. I did seal up the broken windows so no water would get in.

Are the property owners responsible or is it up to the car insurance owners to pay for the repairs

...on how the attorneys for the insurance companies work it out. But, in general, it would be the property owners. It was their ice, and the car was parked legally.

under the comprehensive portion of the car owner's auto policy - at least the glass damage for the second car (the first car is probably a write off). Whether their insurance company then goes after the property owner is another matter, but it shouldn't be the car owner's concern.

Probably? Definitely. Hell, the second might be a write off as well. Body work is incredibly time consuming, BMW sun roofs are very expensive too.

I'm not sure about that. My friend's car was damaged by a brick that flew off their neighbor's chimney during a hurricane, and they were told it was their own problem.

Perhaps the owners should employ Boston's method of ice removal. In response to my recent snow removal request on a street near my house via Citizens Connect they marked the case as "resolved" stating "PWD is not doing snow removal at this time."
So it's simply a matter of stating "The property owner is not doing snow removal at this time." If your car happens to be hit by an icicle or the road is too narrow for two cars to pass each other in oncoming traffic wait until spring.

The incident that happened in Charlestown this morning occurred just moments before I came out of the Y. The cop told me to watch for falling snow. Luckily no one was hurt. Falling ice and snow is very dangerous. Almost got knocked out with falling ice off of one of the buildings in the Navy Yard last week!
