I can't find it at the moment but I've seen an old Boston photo of a group of people struggling to right a horse which had slipped on street ice. It's hard to imagine that horses have any easier of a time dealing with snow and ice than electric trains or hydrocarbon-fueled cars and buses.

Reminds me of a story I was told at work one time, from a nurse who'd been working the hospital for 40 odd years - during 78, none of the docs could get in (or the ones who'd been there overnight, out). Except for two, who came in on their horses. As one of the junior nurses and with the hospital running in emergency mode, she was sent outside every so often to check on the animals while the docs got to work.
