Dorchester murder victim was veteran, father of young daughter

Boston Police, family and friends have identified the man shot to death on Devon Street last Sunday as Levar Godfrey, 31.
His sisters have set up a GoFundMe page to create a scholarship fund for his daughter, 7:
A coward shot and left our brother for dead, and he died at a hospital, alone. Levar turned 31 only 14 days before. Not only did we lose our brother, but his parents lost their son, and a 7yr old lost her father. Levar was not a thug. He was not "in the streets". He was a hard working family man, who would give any stranger the shirt off his own back, just to make them smile.
Levar served his country in the U.S. Army at a young age, and continued to live his life loving his family and friends.

A young man committed to his family
I knew Levar for just a short time but in that time I grew to know him as a man that was committed to making something of his life and to making a lasting impact on his daughter and the world. He worked extremely hard at making a living to support and provide for his family. Whenever we spoke his daughter was always at the forefront of his concerns. Whatever his schedule, he made time for her first. He had plans of attending school this Fall. He wanted to be an example to her, a source of strength to rely on. I cannot imagine the circumstances that have taken such a vibrant, positive and loving person from this world at such a young age. Your struggle will not be in vain. Your smile will always be remembered as genuine, warm and readily available to others. I'm grateful for the opportunity I had to be a part of your struggle to make a difference. The world needed you and others like you. Perhaps God needed you just a bit more. I know you're at his side.
