An SUV crashed through the wall and took three of the exercise bikes out. Police are investigating but no charges are expected

Ha - you laugh; but if they had Hubways down there and no trains, traffic or pedestrians; it'd be a whole hell of a lot quicker/easier/safer to get around the city.

Someone else paid for it.

My first guess would be the PMC, but they are tight with their money (except for cancer research. of course.)

A couple of volunteers to bring in bikes?

Geesh.

Volunteers? Mentally adding up the taxpayer funded city hall FTE hours that would have went into coordinating and setting up that event, it's a lot more than $0.

Maybe they'd actually realize the improvements that are needed

Is the Mayor of Boston somehow obligated to be in awkward bicycle photo ops? http://archive.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/05/13/menino_pedals_for_cycle_friendly_city/
And for those of you with a BPL card and PIN, Please also enjoy this oldie but goodie,
