Surveyors to start visiting West Roxbury's Grove to try to figure out just where the lines are between city property and homeowners' land

A surveying contractor hired by the city should start sending crews into the Grove in a couple of weeks to try to mark out the exact borders between land owned by the Department of Neighborhood Development and residents.

The work in one of Boston's more unusual neighborhoods - where many of the roads remain unpaved and residents still use septic systems - is nothing sinister, Chris Rusk, Mayor Walsh's liaison to West Roxbury, told a meeting of the West Roxbury Civic and Improvement Association.

Over the years, he said, some residents have had trouble selling land because of the uncertainties of exact property lines - while others have started expanding their yards onto what is actually city property. Although the city is willing to sell pieces of land to neighbors, it can't do so without boundaries properly marked out.

Some residents expressed skepticism.

One noted the curious timing - just as Spectra Energy is getting ready to clear land for its high-pressure natural-gas transfer station on one end of the Grove. She said surveying works sometimes precedes efforts by pipeline companies to buy out or take land in what she called the "incineration zones" around such facilities.

Another resident noted Mayor Walsh's desire to build more affordable housing in the city and wondered if some of that might be targeted for the Grove.

Rusk said Mayor Walsh still opposes the transfer station, even though he has been unable to stop it and that the city has no plans to build anything in the Grove.

"incineration zones" around such facilities

Sounds bloody lovely. One would think that they could come up with a more comforting euphemism for that. "Energy release zones" maybe?

Green zone.

I grew up next to a town in the Bay Area where in 2010, a pipeline leak caused a fatal explosion killing 8 residents, injuring others, and destroying homes.

Hopefully the power companies out here are better about meeting safety regulations, performing regular maintenance, and upgrading their infrastructure!

I was tempted to end with a /s tag.

Um, that was the term used by the opponent. There's nothing in the article to indicate that this is, or isn't, an industry term.

It was an anti-pipeline resident who used the phrase.

Where is "The Grove," is it roughly bounded by Grove, Centre, and Washington?

Behind the old 9 to 9 Supermarket on Washington and Grove, go up the stairs beside the packy and there you are, ledge city !

I see those stairs when I'm running down Washington, but I never knew whether it would be legit to go up and explore. I'll have to check it out sometime.

...it was referred to as either the Yukon or the Klondike, I forget which. If there was a fire up there in the winter, and yes, of course there was, the FD motor squad usually wound up towing someone out. Usually more than just one someone.

I think those stairs are private property & lead to backyards. (One stairway is roped-off and has signs saying it's private property.)

But there are streets off Centre, Grove and Stimson that lead into the Grove.

It's an interesting place to walk around - does not feel like a part of the largest city in New England.

The Grove is the neighborhood between Grove St, Stimson and Centre. I grew up between there and the West Roxbury Crush Stone side streets. What I great place to be a kid who just wanted to be in the trees.

I had the pleasure during the christmas season in the late 50's of delivering mail in the Grove. I think they're going to have a hard time finding oout what belongs to who.

Home owners' property values are about to plummet.

Is that new construction sold yet on the corner of Centre St across from the entrance to the Quarry. Not great timing on the builders part.
