Train goes kaput at Stony Brook station, and riders wish they were on vacation

Dead Orange Line train at Stony Brook

Suddenly finding himself with no way to go further north than Stony Brook around 6:20 a.m., Todd Cosentino had plenty of time to photograph the flatlined Orange Line train at Stony Brook. The T says service has since resumed.

UPDATE, 8:30 a.m. Jen Vesp reports: "FYI, the Orange Line is an absolute nightmare this morning. I've only been waiting 50 minutes to fit on a train."

Um...the Orange Line at Stony Brook was fine at 8:15. Waited 3 minutes for train which wasn't even crowded, so better than normal.

It seemed normal or light at 8:15am when I got to Stony Brook...

Don't worry, Baker is on it. He's raising T fees 2x the legal limit to convince more people to drive, reducing demand on the T. Overcrowding leads to lots of the Ts delays, a few more hikes and the T will be under capacity and running smooth. Problem solved.

until the gridlock becomes so bad that everyone will flock back to the T. But in the meantime, nothing will have improved in the MBTA infrastructure, so we will have both overcrowded buses and trains and gridlock.

Something to look forward to!

Short term Baker. Its ironic that at the same time the Baker administration is targeting fare evasion by planning to hire people to stand at platforms along the above ground green line platforms (where conductors have to choose to let people board all doors and lose fares or deal with extremely slow boarding) he is proposing scaling back Somerville green line stations that would have solved this problem by having enclosed stations customers pay to enter (instead of paying while boarding) and instead have ones like those along the B and C line. The Globe also recently reported that the green line is the most delayed (a surprise only to people like Baker who havent used the T since college). Enclosed stations help speed boarding, reducing delays. Its time for Baker to stop governing for the short term and think about our state in the long term, after the next election, to a more functional MBTA. His short term thinking during his time with Weld led to a lot of increased Big Dig debt and MBTA problems (the green line was supposed to be done back the, it only gets more expensive the longer Republicans dither and delay).

Although to be fair, that blame can go back to probably the Weld administration with assignment of blame increasing with every governor after.

But please tell me why it is Baker's fault that the new cars ordered by his predecessor aren't online yet.

What has Baker done to accelerate the delivery of the new cars? Answer: Nothing at all.

If this company is really such a wheel in the manufacture of subway cars for the rest of the world (as they claimed when the bid on the contract), ramping up the production of this order shouldn't be an issue for them. It might mean losing the "do final construction in Springfield" clause - which should never have been in the original contract to start, but if it means getting the new cars - which are desperately needed - sooner than later, I for one am all for it.

...the made in Springfield nameplate is far more important to politicians than any other aspect of this car order.

I just hope to God they're not as screwed up as the Rotem coaches have been.

The delay may have technically cleared early on, but yeah - there were so many people waiting to board that by 8:30, everything was crammed. Glad I started at the end of the line today.

Weirdly my ride in from Roxbury Crossing a few minutes after 8 was emptier than usual yesterday. Only had to wait a minute or two for a train and there was hardly anyone on it.

From Forest Hills was more crowded than usual and the driver made a couple of announcements apologizing for not leaving because the dispatcher wouldn't let him. Then the train seemed to go more slowly than usual all the way to State (at least we didn't "stand by for service adjustment" anywhere).
