Bail set at $250,000 for kid charged with shooting gun inside school headquarters

A 15-year-old was arraigned this afternoon on charges of carrying a firearm without a license, possessing ammunition without an FID card, possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, following this morning's fight in the lobby of the Bolling Building, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The teen, not named because of his age, is due back in court on Feb. 14, the DA's office reports.

Wow. How dumb can a 15 year old be to walk in to a public building in "broad daylight" and pull out a gun to settle a score he had with another teenager?

I know! Scary stuff! That's why I'm broke sending my kids to private school.

Because if it is, you're wasting a lot of money.

to be honest it is a big reason. We tried public but it didn't work out for us. Safety was a big issue without getting into detail. Maybe you were assigned better schools.

my private school was definitely gun free, it also gave zero Fs about fist fights even if the fights weren't numerically or same-age fair.

some kid was cornering my best friend and i ended up sending him to the hospital where he received stitches. i dont recall any punishment, i do recall being sent inside from recess to go tell my teacher in the teachers lounge what happened though.

come to think of it, i sent another kid to the hospital to get stitches after he threw something at my head (this was years later, in a public school) and he and i both got a detention

different times i suppose.

Tough guys like you wouldn't have lasted a week in BPS. Hurting other kids like that would get you stabbed.

I've witnessed gang hits that were orchestrated inside the walls of a private school.

I thought bail was set on flight risk? How is this bail remotely reasonable? 250k for stupid?

Because somebody looking at a lengthy prison sentence (well, for this kid, time with DYS, so not so lengthy except when compared to the rest of his life) is more likely to try to flee. That's why murder suspects, at least in Mass., are never released on bail - the temptation to try to run away from a potential lifetime in prison is just too high.

But just stupid? Kid allegedly had a loaded gun and it's only stupid luck that he didn't get to kill the other kid (or the kid's mother or any of the bystanders). I'd hate to see what you consider a serious crime.

I said stupid because he was ignorant of consequences of his actions. He's looking at a much longer sentience because of where he decided to pop off. Also, I didn't see a attempted murder charge which made me assume he wasn't trying to kill this kid, though everything says he was.

Bail seemed high since people who've actually committed the intended crime have gotten lower bails but it's hard to know all the factors included into that number from a post. Thanks

Remember the Judge also considers his previous acts of crime if there is any. And of course the severity of the crime.

You're one of those people that thinks the constitution still means something, aren't you?
