WBZ reports a jury ordered a guy who worked at Toodies Fine Jewelry in Quincy to pay Stephen Leigh Jewelers $34,500 for a Yelp review that bashed his rival. His lawyer says he may appeal.
Although I have heard ads for them on the radio, I've never been to his store.
In looking at the Yelp page for the business, there are other negative reviews posted, although the review in question wasn't listed. Did he go after the other negative review posters?
In addition, under the Not Recommended reviews, there was one from a 'Stephen B.' of Quincy, MA, that was removed for violating Yelp's TOS...
The public depends so much on online reviews. I think I like the idea that there could be some teeth behind disingenuous use of that medium. If a review inplies a public claim to having actually tried a product as a consumer and not just some profit-driven media war between rivaling businesses.

Maybe, Toodies?
Indeed
WBZ made the original mistake, but I should've known better. Fixed, at least here.
$34,000?!? Because of a Yelp review?
Even if the review was fake, the award is just plain idiotic. I hope it's thrown out on appeal.
How much is defamation of character worth you you then?
