pretty far south for this kiddo
Wonder if it was blown off course from the high winds. The only potential breeding spot in the harbor might be Calf Island or maybe Brewster Island - at least that I can think of. This is a terrific picture! Thanks for sharing this - am also reading up on razorbills.
Female dominated monogamy: I can just hear the intimidated guy responses! Aukward!
Not at all
Razorbills are very common, often abundant, in offshore MA waters (and farther south) in the winter (but they never nest here). I regularly see flocks of hundreds, sometimes thousands, on Stellwagen Bank and off Provincetown in December to March. They tend to winter away from shore, though, so Mary Ellen was fortunate to get this great shot of one this close in the inner harbor where they're never common.
More than one
She reports she saw like 20 of them.
Brrrrr
I appreciate this story, but the idea of wintering at sea gives me a frightening chill!
I found a deceased razorbill
I found a deceased razorbill on the beach - Crowes Pasture in Dennis, MA on 12/23 !
