First and foremost I would like to thank God for not allowing anyone to die in this fire. To the people who lost your homes my heart goes out to you.
To all the First Responders I thank you for your service.

Are those old asbestos shingles? Probably why so many firefighters end up with mesothelioma and other cancers. Terrible.
Those are asphalt shingles.

Asphalt shingles often contain asbestos, as well as tars that are laden with carcinogenic PAHs.
It isn't just asbestos - it is inhaling smoke containing any number of toxic crap. Big reason that they use respirators.
