State could shut in-patient wards at Shattuck Hospital
By adamg on Mon, 02/26/2018 - 10:47pm
WBUR reports state officials have concluded buying a building Boston Medical Center is abandoning in the South End and moving Shattuck's state-funded patients there would be a lot cheaper than doing required renovations at Shattuck - and would get patients closer to programs run by BMC and the BU Medical School.

Not a bad idea. Shattuck as
Not a bad idea. Shattuck as it stands is a run down eye sore. Aside from needing renovations the staff need better training with caring for their sick and/or addicted patients. Moving them closer to BMC should make better treatment options available for patients and hopefully can offer better training for existing staff while also pulling in some with experience.
I am familiar with the Shattuck
It is a teaching hospital affiliated with Tufts. Believe it or not, the patients get better care there than at some private facilities.
They take care of the people that have nothing, no insurance, zero, zip.
When private insurance won't pay anymore the Shattuck takes care of them.
Annual Reports of Shattuck Hospital?...
Where are Annual Reports of Shattuck Hospital?...
Tear it down and return its land to Franklin Park?
What about the services to the homeless?
There is a decent sized shelter attached to the hospital.
Would stay open
At least per WBUR, they're just talking about in-patient beds.
Shelter and outpatient
Shelter and outpatient services are to remain for the time being.
I'm hoping they expand it and take care of some of the people who used to be on long island.
Absolutely. $100MM could go
Absolutely. $100MM could go a long way at this site rather than, you know, building a bridge!
Moving these patients away....
.... from the peace and quiet of Franklin Park and closer to Methadone Mile might not be in their best interest.
You're kidding, right?
You're kidding, right?
It is if they are closer to
It is if they are closer to medical facilities.
Isolation
Actually, it would. The Shateau is a remnant of the "hide them away" era. Access to better care is a major and important advantage of the move.
You haven't been up there
On a locked ward, it doesn't matter.
For those who need a wider array of services, the transitions are difficult.
You clearly have no idea of working inside that place - it isn't quiet, and the patients do not get much access to that "peace and quiet" that you romantically dream about.
Mr or Ms Know-it-all
You are correct in assuming I haven’t been in Shattuck but I have worked on a locked ward and know a thing or two about them.
You didn't read the article
Moving the mental patients to the South End is a boon for them - lots of resources close at hand.
Moving the detox to the Shattuck site would be a great use of peace and quiet for patients who would be able to take advantage of it.
It can't be sold for condos. Public Health Purposes only.
The Shattuck shuffle
I always get worried when state officials claim they are trying to save taxpayers money. Do you actually believe that South End residents will not scream NIMBY when they discover that the Shattuck clients are addicts and convicts serving time in the prison system and the Shattuck shelter serves hundreds of those suffering from severe mental illness and the scourge of addiction. We need more treatment facilities not less.
They can't scream NIMBY
This falls under the type of facility that overrides zoning.
This is literally in my back yard
As I live on the odd side of E. Brookline Street in the South End. The Newton Pavilion is across the alley. I have no problem with the proposal, since it pretty much continues its current use.
I guess you don't know much
Where the F do you even live? Marblehead? The local residents won't scream NIMBY but they may very well express concern that the state (and, city) are overburdening their neighborhood with social services like this facility as well as others.
Based on the comments on their Facebook page, they have been pretty open-minded and receptive to things of this nature and I would assume that would continue.
Meanwhile what has YOUR neighborhood done to help?
Boston needs both!
There are far too few long term inpatient beds for homeless patients. We need the new place by BMC AND the Shattuck to manage the current number of patients who require this type of bed. Maybe with both open we could add more long term psych beds and keep some of those individuals out of jails and shelters. This is a great opportunity to open more beds- I pray that we take it!
Nice real estate
But they could sell all that land for 10s of millions of dollars and luxury condos could go up in a year or two. I mean it is kind of Jamaica Plain.
Yeah, or...
... instead of going for fast cash, the city could invest in the future and build some affordable housing.
the city could invest in the
Why do you think condos won't be an investment in the future and why affordable housing would?
Or return it to parkland?
That's what Frederick Law Olmsted intended.
Nah
Franklin Park is a key asset to the city, especially in the less green, poorer parts of the city. That being said, it's huge and under maintained and I don't think we need to consider the wishes of Olmstead when deciding how to best meet the needs of the city in regards to this piece of land.
Remind me again when
Remind me again when Frederick Law Olmsted was made God.
Olmsted designed that park to lift up the degraded souls of dirty, ignorant immigrants. He said explicitly that even though the poor didn't have the ability to appreciate the pastoral scenes he was creating, they would be improved in spite of themselves.
Tell me where you think Olmsted would fit into today's political scene.
As the descendant of some fairly scrubby immigrants
I honestly don’t care what Olmsted’s outdated intentions were—it works. The emphasis on public green space in an era where fresh air and trees were starting to be off limits to the teeming urban multitudes was and continues to be a huge blessing. Does that mean we have to stick to every recommendation he made? No (he was against the golf course, after all) but let’s not attack a 19th c guy using 21st c mores.
Secret motivation?
That was my first thought. A couple of condo hi-rises overlooking Franklin Park? As corporate raiders would say, "unlock the value."
Ugh. No way. Preserve
Ugh. No way. Preserve nature. No developing at Franklin Park. It's a gem. I'd like to see it become more recreational friendly.
The land must be used by law
The land must be used by law for public health purpose only. So they can't do condos unless they change the law.
It would be great if they moved some of the addiction services out of there and over to the Shattuck ( they already provide some of these services) to take some of the pressure off that area. I live near the "methadone mile" and happen to work for DPH so I am on both sides of this. I see the affected stumbling down the street etc on a daily basis. It's sad but not much is being done since its spilling out into Roxbury and Dorchester. "They" do not care about us having to deal with it. If it was on their front door step it would be cleaned up in a hurry.
The Shattuck is a perfect opportunity to start a change.
Mr. Fox and Sue Sullivan Suck!!!
The guy from the south end who thinks it’s only fair to close a clinic down there and open a second one at the shattuck. I don’t like you! Bet you couldn’t wait for this opportunity to dump your neighborhoods problem on another neighborhood.
Name of road through the Shattuck Hospital?...
What's the name of the little road that runs through the Shattuck Hospital campus?
That would be the parking lot driveway
But the road that goes by the hospital on the park side has two names- Circuit Drive and Jewish War Veterans Drive. Both names are on different signs at the new set of lights at Morton Street. Speaking of Morton Street, the road that runs "behind" the Shattuck would be Morton Street.
Funny and kind of sad to think
that when that road was named, it was still something of a central artery for Boston’s Jewish community. I bet there aren’t a lot of Jewish war vet families living nearby these days.
Hate to say it
But when I was looking at the sign, I thought the same thing. Also, I thought how weird it was that there were two different signs with two different names for the same street.
Jewish War Veterans Dr
I found it interesting when they replaced the street sign as part of the construction they dropped the American from the name. It used to be American Jewish War Veterans Drive. Not sure if there was a reason, much thought, or they just wanted a shorter sign. But they did remove a name that's been there for 50 yrs + .
Don't park your car on that
Don't park your car on that road. Had my back window blown out by a bb gun. Nothing taken from the car. Nothing of value in there that would cause someone to do this. I have heard this has happened to others.
Franklin Park is not monitored very well.
The email we received said
The email we received said $200 million to move to the old East Newton campus of BMC, $400 million to renovate Shattuck or $500 million to build a new Shattuck.
Which Building at BMC?
Which building at BMC? Pretty much all fo them are in use and they have been expanding.
The East Newton campus (aka
The East Newton campus (aka old University Hospital) has been gradually losing inpatient services and that's where they're proposing to put the Shattuck patients. It's a full fledged, stand-alone hospital with inpatient wards, ICUs, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology and surgical services infrastructure although all of that will be moved by next year.
The Menino/Harrison Avenue campus (aka Boston City) is in the middle of a multi-year build-out that will consolidate all of the clinical services of BMC on that side. They've already sold off several of the ENC associated buildings and were planning on selling off ENC to someone.
When's the Community Meeting?
According to WBUR's story, South End folks are already offering proposals for what should happen in JP. Of course.
Governor, Mayor, Rep. Malia, Councilors, when will Shattuck's neighbors get a hearing? Sure, there will be some nimbys but as the Shattuck is already there hopeful most will constructive. But leave us out of any discussion and we'll hold you accountable.
Shattuck neighborhood clinics?...
a) Is a neighborhood clinic still available at Shattuck Hospital?... b) What other neighborhood clinics are in the same Shattuck neighborhood?... c) What neighborhood clinics are in adjacent neighborhoods?
There are neighborhood health centers
All over Boston. Rozzie Square. JP Center. Mattapan Square. All over. The Shattuck has a different role.
