Somebody's created this memorial for Marilyn Wentworth, a lifelong West Roxbury resident who died Feb. 5 when hit by a car on Feb. 5 at Centre and Hastings streets in West Roxbury.
City officials have scheduled a community meeting on Feb. 27 to discuss ways to make Centre Street safer. The session starts at 7 p.m. at the Elks Club, 248 Spring St.

Can we kindly stop labeling advice, in this instance, as "victim blaming."?
Look, when I cross at crosswalks, because I was nearly killed in one, I always, always stop and look both ways. I do not just walk out (and, as I driver, I have had many folks that do) and hope that the car will always stop (and cars need time to stop). Because if they don't, I am hurt and/or dead.
Per example, MIT police, when reporting incidents on campus always say in their emails:
"While victims of crimes are never to blame for criminal activity, there are some precautions that can be taken. In order to protect yourself and your belongings from theft and/or facilitate the recovery of your stolen property, MIT Police encourage you to follow these tips:
• See Something – Say Something: Immediately notify the MIT Police at 617-253-1212 or 100 from any campus phone if you believe a crime is occurring, has occurred, or is about to occur.
• Always lock your office doors and windows. Assure that the locks are in good working order.
• Lock your office door if you are leaving (even if only for a minute or two).
• When entering or exiting an office, make sure the door closes tightly behind you.
• Report suspicious people or activity. Report all tailgaters.
The MIT Police want to remind the MIT community that we are located in an urban setting and share many of the crime and safety issues that exist in any city."
Is this victim-blaming? No, it is not. The MIT police are trying to keep people from being victims of a crime.
The real question is why are you insecure about it?

Adults with the capacity for abstract thought can appreciate the sentiment as well as take responsibility for manufactured public danger. We need to change the way we look at the injuries and deaths caused by car crashes. Acknowledging that motor vehicles are responsible is the first step to getting motor vehicles to change. Vision zero is necessary.
Walking cautiously could save your life though....

I often wear a bulletproof vest to work. If I got shot in the chest one day The day I chose not to wear it, you are damn right I would blame myself. Of course if we banned guns I wouldn’t have been shot too (or not have invented them I should say). Or of course the person who shot me would be to blame the most as well.
But no, I am a cautious walker because I want to be ALIVE. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

Drive courteously, YES, Walk cautiously YES, all that, not victim blaming, very teachable moment for kids. After this tragedy, talked to my kids about what happened and why. What good is it if you "were in the right" but got hit just the same? Assume you an invisible ped, use crosswalks, wait for the light, wear reflective clothing at night, etc. give yourself every advantage. And for my young driver, seeing another car stop for "no apparent reason" at a crosswalk is just like the "bouncing ball" coming out onto the street, it's likely that a pedestrian/child is about to step out. Put 2 + 2 together and STOP, don't worry about horns honking behind you, not worth ruining the lives of 2 families because you're worried about looking silly. And for Pete's sake! Put the phones down!!! [rant over]

Today I was driving behind a cyclist with nowhere near enough room to pass (residential streets), so I was driving in such a way as not to run over her. The car behind me kept blaring their horn and coming up on my ass. Like, do you think I just drive 12 mph for fun? And what if it were the case that my car was having trouble or I was lost or something? The fuck does your horn and your screaming help?
Every time I walk or bike across a road with more than one lane in each direction (or not actually more than one lane, but enough room to pass someone), I fear I'm going to get run over by the person in the next lane who didn't stop for the crosswalk. People see someone stop at a crosswalk and they fucking try and go around. Like, if you can't figure out why someone would STOP AT A CROSSWALK, what the fuck business do you have driving? I was crossing a two-lane road the other day in a crosswalk, someone stopped for us, so we went halfway and were looking to the right to make sure the second half of the crosswalk was clear, and someone decided to pass the stopped car BY GOING IN THE ONCOMING LANE. The fuck?

I think placing Cops at Crosswalks, (outside their cruisers, without their cruiser in sight) to watch and be able to site the reckless drivers would be a good idea.

Also further up by Macys Liquors. Lived in the neighborhood for 2 years. Some of the nastiest drivers I've ever encountered. I've had drivers randomly scream swears at me as I crossed the street and I'm a fast walker.
