Kicky crowd surfer floods the Middle East, brings firefighters

New England Sounds reports a particularly frenetic crowd surfer at the recent Candy show at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge managed to kick out a ceiling sprinkler pipe that flooded the venue until Cambridge firefighters arrived to turn off the water.

The floor was ordered shut and headliner Show Me the Body couldn't take the stage.

I was once under a sprinkler head that failed and the initial rush of water that comes out was the black, stagnant water that had been sitting in those pipes for however long. It was foul and the stains never came out of the shirt I was wearing (the black shorts were okay since it didn't show).

You wouldn't have lasted a minute in the old punk days at the Rat in the late 1970s.The pipes above the front of the stage always leaked foul, rusty water. It was a point of pride to get it on you. Extra points if somebody spilled beer on you. Intentionally or unintentionally.

I spent a lot of time at the Rat in those days. I usually managed to avoid getting beer on me by getting it in me instead. Wading in it, however, was unavoidable.

Honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened before. That's a low ceiling.
