Man once charged as fedora-wearing 'Backstreet Bandit' charged with two North End bank robberies; on the lam

Gala

Rolando Gala's robbery attire has come down a bit over the past decade, police say: Where once he was dubbed the "Backstreet Bandit" for robbing banks clad in a fedora and button-down shirts, like the Back Street Boys, he robbed two banks on Hanover Street in the North End last month wearing nothing on his head, two untucked T-shirts, a pair of ill fitting jeans and sneakers.

Police have fingered Rolando Gala for the robberies of the Century Bank and Citizens Bank branches on the morning of Sept. 17; now they have to catch him.

If you've seen him, contact detectives at 617-343-4248 or the anonymous tip line by calling 800-494-TIPS or by texting TIP to CRIME (27463).

In 2010 and then again in 2011, Gala was charged for bank robberies north of Boston, in which he would wear a fedora.
