DCR, we assume, planted some new trees along VFW Parkway at Atlantis Street in West Roxbury last Thursday. And sometime over the weekend, Mike Bresinski reports, somebody sawed them in half.

Whoever did this is seriously damaged goods, and probably should be locked up.

Is somebody out to get rid of certain kinds of trees due to their allergenic potential?
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/bo...
Still effed up to just kill them rather than work to get regulations that counteract the problem. This may not even be one of the older varieties that cause so many problems.
Maybe, but...

...given that city-planted trees are a pretty minor factor in all that flora out there, it would be super dumb. But whoever did this is a grade A idiot any way you slice it.
Not minor

In areas that have pretty much only street trees, the pollen can be a serious problem. Planting all male trees means that pollen does not get taken up by female trees, and many of the popular species since the 1950s are prolific pollen spewers.
This is becoming an issue with greenspace initiatives to control urban heat retention and suck up water from downpours that flood streets.
Of course the answer is to make sure that plantings are not pollen spewers, not saw off new trees.
Could it have been..

The cut is to clean for that guy. His MO was hand tools. Someone used a power tool here.
He could have upgraded

You can get a serviceable cordless chainsaw for around $150. A sawzall is less. Whatever the tool used here, the user is a tool. Even if they're an anti-pollen crusader, they have committed a crime against nature.
That was my first thought as well

But he's in his 60s now and after several decades of chopping/killing trees within a couple blocks of the Brighton BPL branch, I don't think he's suddenly moved on, even if he could find West Roxbury.

If Magoo was Bruce Banner, Magoo would be a raging green hulk right now, Magoo is so angry. But that might be counter productive because with Magoo transformed into Magoo-Hulk, Magoo-Hulk would likely be raging around the city and parks ripping up all sorts of trees and doing similar environmental destruction, thus Magoo-Hulk would cause more damage than the original damage that was the catalyst for Magoo to transform into Magoo-Hulk. Magoo-Hulk.
