Man's June wedding day ended with him stabbed in the leg at Hyde Park dive; he's still out of work and needs more surgery

Update: Board concludes Cavan Cafe did nothing wrong.

A man who got married on June 23 agreed to go out with a friend for a celebratory drink that night. They wound up at the Cavan Cafe, 1464 Hyde Park Ave. in Hyde Park - where the two got stabbed in the parking lot by a guy who followed them out after they left, not long after they arrived, then decided to call it a night.

The newlywed, who had never even been to the Cavan before, told the Boston Licensing Board this morning he's been unable to return to work because of the injuries he suffered getting stabbed in the right thigh: He had surgery after the stabbing and has another operation scheduled. His friend, police say, was stabbed in the left leg.

According to the victim and the bartender, the two friends came in and ordered a drink - the man a bottle of beer. They hadn't even finished their drinks when they went outside. The bartender told the board she left their drinks alone, she figured they were just going outside for a smoke.

The bartender said it was a calm, convivial night at the Cavan. She said the two guys even chatted with other customers - including one man who was playing pool. "Everybody was having a nice time," she said.

The newly wedded man said he noticed his friend was already drunk and decided he'd had enough and wanted to leave before he'd even finished his beer, so they headed out to the bar parking lot, across tiny A Street.

Accounts varied as to what the pool player did when the two left. The newly betrothed man said the guy immediately followed him and his friend outside, the bartender said he finished his pool game and then, five to ten minutes later, left as well.

The victim said that as he and his friend were out in the parking lot, the pool player approached them, with a full head of angry steam: "He was talking about somebody going to get murdered, and I turned around and I got poked," he said, adding he doesn't know why the man decided to stab him and his friend.

The bartender said she had no idea blood was being spilled outside - because she thought the guys were just going out for a smoke, she wasn't watching the feed from the camera the bar has pointed at the lot. Then a regular called the bar phone and told her she'd better get outside, because there was "a scuffle" at the rear of the lot. She rushed outside, saw the two freshly stabbed men, with one of them talking to police on his phone. She said she grabbed the phone to tell police the bar's address when it seemed like the call taker was having trouble figuring out where the Cavan was.

Police said they have yet to apprehend the suspect.

The bartender said the guy police say stabbed the other two men "used to come into the bar."

The board decides Thursday whether the Cavan could have done anything to prevent the double stabbing and, if so, whether any sanction is warranted.

The guy got married that afternoon and went out with a male friend that night to celebrate the occasion. Shouldn't he have been with his newly wedded bride on their honeymoon instead?

As part of a big conspiracy to force the very few remaining "neighborhood" bars like the Cavan, Master McGrath's, the Village Manor, Costello's and the Gallway House to close down and send their full liquor licenses to expensive restaurants in the Seaport?

Oh, right, yes, Boston Police has nothing better to do than to respond to stabbings and issue citations to bars in a bid to get them to sell their licenses.

In any case, the Village Manor can't sell its liquor license to a place in the Seaport, since it's in Dedham and liquor licenses can't be sold across town lines.

Hey, why not spend your wedding night with your new spouse???

If the guy had gotten married, he was no longer betrothed.

And, to echo others, WTH was he doing going out with a friend on his wedding night?!

….. because he went for a drink with his friend after he got married but not bothered by his getting stabbed?

"Wow, sucks that he got stabbed" may be a very common sentiment, but just isn't that interesting.

"Goes out with a friend instead of spending the rest of the day with his new spouse" seems pretty unusual, though! I don't know how many people are bothered by it vs just confused.

("Was there really no provocation leading to the stabbing" wasn't represented in the comments until now, though, and that's a little strange. But often it turns out there's just missing information and there was mistaken identity/words exchanged/etc.)

Imagine there's a story about a car crash but one of the cars was painted like a dachshund. What do you *think* people are going to talk about? "Wow car accidents suck hope everyone's OK" is just sort of implied. You don't need to say it.

You are less cynical than I. Two coffees later and I agree with you.
