Police hunt grandparent scammer

Scammer

Boston Police report they are looking for a man they say convinced one grandparent he was a public defender who needed several thousand dollars in cash to spring his grandson from a reckless-endangerment charge.

Police say the scammer contacted his victim, 83, by phone and convinced him to bring several thousand dollars in cash to Tremont Street, near West Street, downtown on Friday afternoon.

The guy, who was not, in fact, a public defender for the grandson, who was not, in fact, needing bail, then skipped out, police say.

He's described as Black, between 35 and 50 and about 5'10" with an average build.

If he looks or sounds familiar, contact detectives at 617-343-4571.

If you have elderly parents or grandparents, talk to them about these scams. They should have a list of family members they can call when faced with this kind of situation. If they can’t reach anyone, then 9-1-1.
Elderly people, like children, need to be extremely wary when approached by some stranger out of the blue.
