BJ's to roll out rival to Stop & Shop's Mahty - with eyes that blink

BJ's announced today it's going to install hundreds of giant wheeled stalks to roam aisles making sure all its inventory is where it's supposed to be.

Unlike Marty at Stop & Shop, which has large unblinking googly eyes, BJ's Tally has an LCD screen with eyes that pretend to blink every so often.

No word on whether, if Tally finds a missing item, it will freeze in place and ominously flash yellow until a human comes and fixes the problem.

If the CVS stores Downtown, Canal Street, and Center Plaza each had one the employees would be running around crazy. Not even sure if the Center Plaza branch is there. The opoid epidemic and homeless population loves CVS.

Center Plaza has been closed for at least a year or two now.

I agree, considering I almost got assaulted outside the CVS in central square a few hours ago. Some of these folks are just getting braisen with their ask of money. She literally blocked me from going into CVS so she could ask for money and wouldn't take no for an answer.

I said "excuse me" and pushed her aside to get into the door. I'm sorry my sympathy ends when you invade my personal space to ask for money.

This issue is becoming worse and worse. And little is being done to quelle the behavior, or even help these folks get into treatment or housing or something.

I've been cornered several times by that stupid Stop & Shop monster and then menaced by its beeping while waiting for it to let me move. I really don't need that experience replicated at another store I frequent.

Sorry... Maybe it's your local Marty. My local ones run from me when I try to get a closer look

I don't see how this could possibly be cheaper than hiring some humans to do this work, even in the current labor market, but hey why the hell not!

No benefits need to be paid
No laws need to be followed, so this machine can work 24/7/365 non stop.
No breaks, no time off. No vacation time needs to happen.

Same reasons why cities and state gov't "contract" everything out. Can't have people on the payroll and pay for their benefits, so let's do it 'cheaper' and outsource everything (which in return, in recent news, just makes thing cost more and take twice as long)

I don't think people understand how expensive humans can be. Even in places with limited benefits there are mandatory taxes and other benefits you need to provide. Not to mention sick time and training. Plus yes the ability to work non-stop 24-7. Theres also the idea that humans doing the same job will be asked things by customers where as this little guy will not and if you do need the price of something you can just scan it off of him with the barcode. They don't want employees "wasting" time with customers.
