Can you Dig it? Dig, BINJ founders launch statewide news site

Jason Pranas, who watched the pandemic take down the Weekly Dig, today announced the start of a new, and non-profit statewide news site: HorizonMass: "A new general interest, statewide, digital news publication with the tagline 'independent student-driven reporting in the public interest.' "

Besides its Dig roots, the site also has its origins in the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism, which Pranas and Chris Faraone founded.

In a state as well as country where we have few independent voices I very much wish them success.

I wish them all the best and fully support the project.

That said, the best journalist are those with years of experience. A student can certainly cover a story but there's a lot to be said for knowing the history of a topic and fostering relationships for years. It's hard for a student to replicate that even if their editor has the chops.

One of the things that makes Uhub such a good site is that Adam does a great job putting things into context along with some background when needed.

Journalism is a hard, poorly paid, and mostly thankless job. So there's not many who go though school and keep at it for a decade or longer needed to really get good at the job. But hopefully the students in this project buck the trend.

Magoo wonders if there will be a comments section so Magoo can share the same fun fun time as Magoo share here. Magoo

Chris Faraone and the BINJ folks eventually took over the Weekly Dig, but they didn't found it.

I didn't realize that the Dig had stopped even electronic publishing until I saw this announcement. (They discontinued paper editions in April 2022.)
