Coyote chases woman down Marcella Street in Roxbury; she is saved by rusty, noisy playground gate

Coyote in the outfield

Coyote in the outfield before it began its pursuit.

Sue O'Connell, yes, that Sue O'Connell, reports she was walking her dog at the Connolly ballfield at Marcella Park in Roxbury early this morning when she noticed what appeared to be a lost dog in the outfield. And then it began running at her and her pet and she realized that was no dog, it was a coyote.

"Chased me down Marcella Street," she says. "Luckily, the Marcela playground has a gated fence that’s noisy." She explains:

I always enjoy the internal dialogue when something like this is happening..."Am supposed to make myself bigger or smaller? Should run or stand still? Should I let my dog bark at it or will that make it madder?"

Luckily the playground I ran through had a wrought iron gate that I slammed and it made a big noise. That gave me time to get into the street, then behind some parked cars.

And then she called 911.

She is lucky she was not in London. The City takes good care of their playgrounds there.

She may have run into a werewolf, looking to get a dish of beef chow mein at Lee Ho Fooks.

Per city rules.
Glad everyone is OK though.

Although she might then be chased by a sex offender panhandler.

Looks more like a coywolf. Although that's used as another name for the eastern coyote, they are larger than their western counterparts. Offhand I'd say that was a full grown adult coywolf. I saw one in Mission Hill. They tend to have bigger shoulders than the adolescents you usually see and western coyotes.

But they get called "coyotes" anyway because that's the predominant species in the mix.
