Late-ish-night ice cream could be coming to Brighton Center

Crittenden

Update: Later hours approved.

The Boston Licensing Board votes tomorrow whether to let the Scoop and Scootery, Washington Street at Chestnut Hill Avenue in Brighton, stay open until 1 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

Owner Austin Crittenden told the board this morning that extending his current 11 p.m. closing time would not only help him better serve area college students with late-night munchies - who can order up ice cream for delivery - and walk-in barflies from nearby watering holes, but would help him bring in extra revenue to help combat the rising cost of all the stuff he needs to buy to make the ice cream and cookies he sells.

Crittenden said his Scoop and Scootery in Arlington is actually open until 2 a.m. and that even his Allston outlet is open until 1 a.m. He said he's had no problems at ither location.

Nobody spoke against the proposal. The Brighton-Allston Improvement Association did suggest a one-year limit to the later closing time so the board could review it to ensure nothing untoward was happening and asked that any music played after 11 p.m. be lowered to "appropriate levels" for the later hours.

There are plenty of people who crave ice cream late at night, and not just students or people who have the munchies from ingesting now-legal substances.

I'm eating ice cream at 1 a.m., if I'm up that late.

I haven't been going out to get it at that hour, or getting it delivered, because having a few different flavors in my freezer allows for immediate gratification. But the option would be welcome, and why shouldn't people be able to get ice cream late at night?

OK, trick question, I'm still getting used to the idea of mandatory closing hours for shops and restaurants that don't sell alcohol. But an ice cream parlor is as wholesome as it gets.

People who work third shift, such as at a hospital, like, say, St. E's, right in the same area.

If any child is leaving St. Elizabeth's late at night, know that I am thinking of them with sympathy and I believe they should be able to get ice cream.

comment that it's absolutely ridiculous that this needs board approval, you own a business you should get to set your own hours period. Let the market decide when places stay open. This is a city for fuck's sake.
