Long closed Hyde Square pizza place to re-open under new ownership, name

The Boston Licensing Board today approved plans by Mario Bailote to re-open the old Oggi pizza place at 8 Perkins St. as Mario's Pizza.

Bailote was familiar to local pizza maven's for his shop on Humboldt Avenue in Roxbury, which closed last year.

He won approval for his proposed hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Zoning Board of Appeal last week approved the take-out permit Bailote will need, and he is currently advertising for employees.

In other Jamaica Plain restaurant news, the licensing board approved plans by Casa Verde, 711 Centre St., for a 24-seat seasonal patio. Owner David Doyle had opened a temporary patio during the pandemic; the vote means he no longer has to seek annual approval.

Also, the board approved a request from BU Bistro, doing business as Pomona Cafe, for a beer and wine license, should one be available, which it probably won't be, for the space where Simpli Bites used to be at 3840 Washington St. on the JP/Roslindale line.

Manager Bryan Lopez said the new place would start out serving breakfast and lunch before trying to expand into dinner hours.

Michael Reiskind of the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council, supported the application, nothing the space has two outdoor patios and that Forest Hills has been hard hit by restaurant closings - the Dogwood Cafe and Bukhara - of late.

The Miami Restaurant, 381 Centre St., is getting new owners, but proposed manager Leandro Tejeda said they are not looking at any major changes, save a proposal to stay open until 1 a.m. Thursday through Sunday. The board deferred any action on their request to buy the current owner's liquor license pending a Jan. 2 meeting between the Tejeda brothers and the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council.

I’ve missed Mario’s Pizza, they secretly had one of the best burgers in the city and excellent Portuguese food

The real O.G.s remember Mario from his time at Same Old Place! Great guy. Can't wait

Pretty sure Oggi has been closed for longer than it was open. I don't remember it ever being open at all, in fact.

There is an Oggi pizza shop on Mount Auburn Street in Harvard Square, the back side of Harvard's Smith Center.

Same place (just not the same old place).

*Local pizza mavens were first familiar with Mario from his days as a Same's OG. Freddy's #2.

*Oggi never opened there.

Unnecessarily snooty pizza rant over.

Oggi was indeed open in that location, maybe 10-15 years ago. They were touted to be reopening last year, but it never happened.

Oggi was open there in the early 2000s.

Just last night as I was enjoying a pint at the Behan, I was reminiscing about living on Halifax St, spending Friday nights walking to Oggi to order a pizza, then over to Video Underground to grab a couple of movies, followed by a drink at the Behan, before heading home for chill night.
