The Nova Scotia Tree arrives
By adamg on Tue, 11/21/2023 - 11:37am
Adam Castiglioni captured this year's Nova Scotia Christmas tree arriving in Boston this morning.
This year's 45-foot-tall white spruce is the latest Christmas gift from the province in thanks for the doctors, nurses and medical supplies Boston sent north after the 1917 explosion in Halifax harbor.
The tree, now in its usual spot on the Common, will officially be lit on Nov. 30.

One of Boston's better
One of Boston's better traditions. Thank you, Nova Scotia.
One of Boston's Finest Moments
The Halifax Explosion resulted from the collision of two heavily laden munition ships in the middle of a busy port area. It was the largest human-caused blast prior to the nuclear age.

In the face of a nor'easter, Boston rushed medical personnel, supplies, and prefab housing up the coast to help in any way possible.
I found out years after my grandfather died that he got out of school early that year, travelled with other teens from Quebec to Halifax, and spent the next two weeks rounding up horses and other livestock that survived the disaster before they froze or starved. He was fifteen years old. The fact that he never told stories about this (and he told stories about everything) speaks to the nature of what he witnessed.

I was a little surprised to learn that Boston and Halifax aren't official sister cities (not sure who decides that, or how), but they are forever our friends. Thank you, Nova Scotia.
No, thank you.
As a Nova Scotian who's lived in Boston for 16 years almost, thank you Boston for everything you did then. My only wish is for the ties between Boston and Halifax to be strengthened by a more economical means of getting back and forth between the two cities. Flying is expensive and the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth saves little in time and is also not cheap. Make that ferry high speed and from Boston to Halifax instead!
