As bad as the T was this morning, at least riders didn't have to worry about the convicted sex offender trying to stick his pet rats in their faces

Jeffrey Stewart

Transit Police report arresting a man at Haymarket station on Sunday night because, they say, he was "harassing other passengers" with his pet rats - Tom and Jerry.

Jeffrey Stewart, 58, was scheduled for a hearing in Boston Municipal Court this morning on charges that included failing to register as a sex offender, which he is supposed to do because of convictions on three counts of lewd and lascivious behavior in 2005 and one count of child rape in 1987, according to state records.

Stewart was also wanted on warrants for making threats and disturbing the peace, Transit Police say. The rats were turned over to Boston animal control, for transport to its Roslindale shelter.

Police add Stewart is "well known" to them. In March of last year, police arrested Stewart at Oak Grove on the Orange Line after they say he used Jerry - Tom was not around - to threaten passengers as he enjoyed a bottle of liquor on a bench. At the time, Jerry also became a Rozzie rat when he was handed over to Boston animal control.

Innocent, etc.

This miscreant can be found most days, barring this one I suppose, head banging to heavy metal music and morning drinking at Walgreen’s downtown. The party never stops.

Huge fail by doctors, laws, government, politicians, judges, and mental health facilities.

I was wondering "I wonder what crack he slipped thru"

Meaning.. what mental health facility, state agency or whatever failed on this guy. Clearly he needs some help and isn't getting any.

The person clearly needs mental help and isn't getting it. And its HIS fault?!?

No, its not. Its the state's for not doing enough.

The sex offender registry is great for public because it lets the public know where sex offenders are. But its not great as the sex offenders because they can't get jobs, housing, or even medical care.

We pass these laws and thing 'great we're doing something' but in the end, you've created another problem in the process. In this case, it's homelessness, and so ppl with issues just wandering the streets.

And while some may think 'who cares they are pervert sex offenders'. You should care. By keeping them busy and off the streets they are less likely to reoffend, stay out of jail, and out of trouble. And you never know they might even fade back into society. But most importantly, it'll keep them away from you!

people always wonder "why are there so many homeless/vagrant people". Exhibit A is right here.

But death is too good for a creep like this. He’s an aggressive, 6’4 alcoholic who attacks people constantly. Some people are dangerous and probably beyond help. If the system failed anyone, it’s failed the underage girl he raped. But that wasn’t you, right? So yeah, the answer is getting him a therapist.

Nah. He deserves a bullet between the eyes, full stop. If he gets out of an institution again before he’s too old to reoffend, that’s another failure.

You’re not enlightening anybody. I get it, there’s a mental health crisis. But. People have a choice. He’s chosen to black out most every day all his life. Talk to him for about three seconds and you’ll see how dark his personality is. He’s a self-described Satan worshipper. Maybe he’ll be wearing his sleeveless Charles Manson shirt so you can have a little perspective about why some people can’t “fade back into society”. But the Sea Ice vodka will be flowing and Venom will be playing as he’s there bellowing at the 11-year-olds passing by.

Funny thing, the SORB is full of people like him.

No, you don't get it.

Know what personal agency is? Do you need me to explain the phrase “people have a choice” to you?

You’re right, maybe, there are no bad people in the world, just people who have therapists and people who don’t, right?

You seem to think therapy is the only treatment out there. No buddy, there's alot more out there and far different treatment.

You also seem to think that people just walk into treatment centers and say "help me" because you seem to think that this guy has not, he has failed.

No it works the other way around. People are PLACED into programs by the state. And often its a REQUIREMENT linked to some court proceedings. And often they are FORCED TO GO.

But since he is a sex offender, the number of places he can be places into is next to nothing. Because of attitudes from people like you. No one wants to have their tax money to run these programs so they are usually the first to go when cuts happen.

So where do these people go next? The streets. And we wonder why they do this shit and re-offend.

But that's OK. We'll just adopt your 'bullet between the nose therapy' for anyone we don't like. Who's next in your list? Heroin addicts? I mean why stop at sex offenders. Lets just shoot everyone we don't like or are derelicts of society. I mean it'll be cost effective and you won't lose any sleep over it. right? RIGHT?

I hope you continue to know no one with a deep/serious mental disorder. For their sake.

You probably think it either doesn't exist or is just "emo having sad today".

Got news for you dear: If you are mentally ill to this extent, YOU DON'T HAVE PERSONAL AGENCY! YOU LACK THE ABILITY TO MAKE SANE DECISIONS. THAT IS THE LEGAL DEFINITION OF INSANITY!

Please educate yourself about these things that even the legal system recognizes as real.

Full stop. Sorry you don't get a pass at calling death for someone.

You clearly don't have fucking clue when thats your answer.

Not even going to waste my time with you. You clearly are ignorant.

on a repeat violent sex offender with underage victims is something that’s not going to cost me a ton of sleep.

get in the way of your overweening self-regard here, it must be pretty nice. Plenty of serial killers and rapists have more or less clean psychological profiles.

Some people know the difference between right and wrong and consciously do bad things, that happens. Cumbaya.

You really just wanna throw this back at me. Go fold it in four corners...

I've worked in human service for 5 years. I learned alot. I also learned how to be compassionate.

You might benefit from learning about it too. You don't have a clue.

Some people know the difference between right and wrong

As someone who just said he'd rather see a bullet between the eyes.. I'm not entirely sure thats right to do. And in fact, its pretty wrong.

Eat some crow for breakfast. You deserve it.

you worked in human services for five years, that makes you an expert in everything. When you were working as a receptionist at Bay Cove, how many violent sex offenders did you deal with?

“Compassion” if it does not include consideration for the victims is ego-stroking. If I were Jeffrey’s case manager I would make 100% sure he was nowhere near the street unless and until he had made meaningful restitution to his victims, completed a battery of psychological testing that cleared him for reentry into society, he would need to show continued participation in an outpatient recovery program, weekly probation meetings, monthly SORB compliance, he would need to complete job training, and there are a few other things specific to him that require doing.

Clearly not much of that was in motion while he was drinking his brains away downtown.

So, failing all that, I’m not very sympathetic towards people who specifically choose to do bad things. Again, hang out with him while he’s head banging away in Charlie Manson gear and guzzling vodka, it’s not like you’re one of his victims.

Could you possibly be more pointlessly hostile?

five years’ non-specialist experience as expertise, maybe. For all you know, I’m a psychiatric nurse at McLean who’s seen a lot more than you have.

We have a murderous psycho here - or at least an internet tough guy preaching about knowing right from wrong while making murder noises.

Calling for murder of people not responsible for their own actions stands out as something that might need moderation?

Oooh, he says "flex", just like all the cool kids were saying last year. It doesn't matter if you're a psychiatric nurse or a hot dog vendor - credentials (IF you have them) don't make your statements any less messed up.

I was on board the train for accepting personal responsibility for your actions unless the state could definitively prove that you could not be accountable for them and that she had a point right up until the bullet between the eye comment. That’s too much. Dismissing someone as ignorant is also too much. You never know what’s behind a comment like that, such as first-hand experience in which case I’d say there’s not so much ignorance in the mix as strong emotion.

I don’t know who decides how much control this dude does or does not have control over himself and his actions, but I’ve have to agree that they’re not doing a good job of figuring out exactly what that is because he hasn’t stopped doing disturbing and invasive things to people. Menacing people with rats is a lesser offense than raping children, but that’s disturbing nevertheless. He has no regard for innocents. Something ain’t right and I don’t think it’s more or less wrong to feel disgust, compassion, a mixture of both, or something else in the emotional spectrum.

It's frustrating to read a story like this as someone who has had first-hand experience with pervy adults as a kid and subway creepers who feel like it is their duty to approach passengers on the trains/buses who just want to get to wherever they’re going to do/say whatever the hell it is that they feel compelled to do for attention. None of this is some amazing new phenomenon. It’s pretty demoralizing to witness and it’s worse when you’re the person who gets to be the one to receive whatever it is that is to be today’s message. I don’t know what it was about me that said “please definitely approach me specifically on the train and/or bus, these headphones are just a ruse” but it got to a point where I got agoraphobia.

The system can be absolutely failing someone in multiple ways *and* they can be a huge asshole. I don't know how much of which in this *particular* case, of course.
