The Boston City Council today agreed to consider how to recruit and train federal workers "who have recently fallen victim to draconian, mass layoffs without cause" for at least some of the 2,000 positions the city now has open.
Councilor Benjamin Weber (Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury), a lawyer who worked on labor issues before his election, said the city could help workers laid off for political reasons while at the same time provide "vital services to our residents."
He said the city has had problems filling some particularly technical positions, including engineers and plans examiners - and noted that the state recently announced services to help the workers find new jobs.
