Fenway flooding

The roads around the Landmark Center are a mess this morning becuase of the flooding that Lindy captured around 6:30 a.m. She advised:

Avoid the area if you can. I was on foot so not bad but traffic/public trans is AWFUL

Boston Police urge people who drive or take the bus through Chinatown to either allow way more time or just find another way to get out of the area during the evening rush hour due to street closings caused by this morning's flooding and manhole smoldering.

UPDATE: BFD reports second worker drowned.

A water main gave way shortly before 1:10 p.m. at Dartmouth and Tremont streets, with at least one worker trapped as the water rushed in. Around 2:20 p.m., the Boston Fire Department reported firefighters were draining the trench to recover his body. Read more.

UPDATE: Jamaica Plain News reports on the exact cause. A giant block of granite was involved.

Late last night, a water main blew its gasket at Centre Street and South Huntington Avenue, flooding the intersection and knocking out water service to much of Jamaica Plain - leaving many residents this morning no way to take showers or make coffee. Read more.

Yellow tap water

Kristen Adams is among several South End residents reporting their tap water started coming out yellow or brownish last night.

UPDATE: Matt Schneller reports a BWSC crew was out working on the problem this morning and that, whatever the cause was, it seems to be fixed.

WHDH reports several streets flooded when the main gave way this morning at West Broadway and D Street. Stanley Staco reports the break, around 5 a.m., caused a large sinkhole.

The Globe posts a database of the more than 3,500 Boston addresses that are connected to BWSC water mains with lead pipes - which means occupants should probably let their water run for a bit first thing in the morning.
