Nigerians protesting outside Boston City Hall

As BPS students and parents protested program cuts near the Bill Russell statue, a smaller group of Nigerian expats and Nigerian-Americans were holding a protest of their own a bit closer to the Government Center T stop.

Oromo protesters outside Boston City Hall

City Hall Plaza became the focus today of a protest against the Ethiopian government's attempts to take land owned by members of the Oromo ethnic group.

You might think City Hall Plaza is a public space where the public has the right to enjoy the First Amendment, but you might think wrong, at least according to Boston Municipal Protective Services, which says it doesn't apply when a group, in this case Boston GreenFest, rents out the plaza for an event. Mayor Walsh formally inaugurated the new City Hall "lawn" - a 40x40 piece of Astroturf - with cornhole, Adirondack chairs and food he cooked up himself.

Shamus Moynihan watched workers putting down Astroturf on a 40x40 stretch of City Hall Plaza as part of Mayor Walsh's effort to make the normally barren brick wasteland more fun. Part of the effort also includes the plastic Adirondack chairs the city recently plunked down on the plaza.

Mayor Walsh is soliciting ideas on how to convert City Hall Plaza from a barren brick wasteland into a place people would actually want to spend time on when it's not being used for concerts, festivals or circus performances.

This is the people's plaza, and we’ve seen how it can bring the City together for international events and community events alike. I’m looking to our experts in architecture and urban planning for design, curation, and partnership ideas, as well as residents of Boston and other interested parties.

Because that's when the Patriots Duck Boat parade will start at the Prudential Center. It will end with at City Hall, rather than with the ceremonial dunking in the Charles, because the Duck Boats are not equipped as icebreakers.

UPDATE: Mayor Walsh says no rally at City Hall, though, due to all the snow and the windchill. Also: City is working to remove snow from everywhere, not just the parade route, mayor says. He adds:

I think we're gonna have school tomorrow. We're not cancelling school for the parade tomorrow, I can tell you that.

Clydesdale on Boston's City Hall Plaza

The Budweiser Clydesdales are on City Hall Plaza today through Sunday as a Budweiser video crew shoots one of its "responsible drinking" ads at a couple of local bars over the weekend.
