Nearly empty City Hall Plaza in Boston

As increasingly dark clouds rapidly closed in on downtown late this afternoon, organizers called off the Boston Calling concerts for tonight. Jeremy Stanley photographed the scene.

Will reports:

They told us to shelter in a parking garage. I guess they dont want thousands of sweaty hipsters inside city hall.

The Dig reports on how IBM and the city teamed up on a pilot surveillance program to record every single person who attended the two Boston Calling events at City Hall Plaza last year.

City officials did not extend the program to this year's concerts in part because they couldn't figure out a good public-safety need to do so. Also, the Dig reports, the city hasn't come up with any privacy policies for all those photos.

Belgians at City Hall Plaza

A packed crowd on a sweltering City Hall Plaza watched Belgium eliminate the US 2-1 in the World Cup. Although the vast majority of people were, of course, rooting for USA, there were a few Belgian fans scattered about, including these two right up at the front, shown during an anxious (for them) moment early on in the match.

This guy, however, was rooting for the red, white and blue:

Waterfall in City Hall Plaza

The City Hall Plaza waterfall in 1973. From the National Archives.

The Herald reports on the secret effort in the days before last weekend's Boston Calling to shore up the large corner of City Hall Plaza by the JFK building that once contained a sunken mini-plaza and waterfall - after an engineer warned the whole area was on the verge of collapse and could not have any weight at all put on it.

Bonus: The crusading DPW official who engineered the rapid effort never told the mayor. who is not pleased.
