Uneven plowing in Boston

I've got to hand it to the Boston DPW - they did an excellent job keeping our Roslindale street plowed and sanded (a salt/sand truck even came by again around 8 a.m.). Up in Allston, however, Harry Mattison provides photographic proof that the city didn't do such a hot job. What about where you are?

Would it surprise you to learn that the MBTA didn't do a very good job clearing away Green Line platforms?

Beacon Street in Brookline was kind of a hot mess. The sidewalks were the problem for me-- I nearly went flat on my back twice on my way to the T (the platform was coated a couple inches thick in ice-- way to shovel, T!).

After stepping into a 6-inch deep ice water bath yesterday in Cleveland Circle, I noted that Brighton was still in horrible shape this morning. The sidewalks are a horror and the streets not much better. A couple inches of ice are pretty much everywhere thanks to everyone deciding to let the rain clear out the snow and then discovering that it just turned the snow into slush which is no iced over and then deciding to just leave it. I'm dreading my return to Malden this evening because things are always worse there. No one bothers to clean their sidewalks. Even the city doesn't.

Naturally, the Riverside station was a disaster. Everything was covered with ice with a thin layer of mud on top thanks to the T's "Dump Sand On It" solution to ice/snow management. Basically, everything is a muddy hockey rink.

I know. Homeowners and businesses are responsible for clearing out their own sidewalks. However, in my walk through downtown today, there were several closed businesses, parking lots, and a T station all not even remotely cleared. And then add to this the wind gusts, and I should have strapped a god damn sail to my back and glided to the office.

But no. This walker had to take it to what was cleared out - the streets in front of North Station, much to the chagrin of the speeding cars and trucks. Yes, dear Boston DPW, I was playing in fucking traffic. And when I had to use the sidewalks, I walked, slid, and babystepped my way through. My back hurts from being all tensed up in this crap. My knees hurt from being locked in place for 25 minutes of babystepping and sliding. My head hurts...because thinking about this crap makes my head hurt, dammit. ...

We have a city program for snow removal off the streets, so our drivers can be safe. Why don't you, Boston DPW, extend this program to help out the incredibly large number of residents who keep the roads safe by leaving their cars at home and taking public transportation or WALKING IN AMERICA'S WALKING CITY (TM). ...

Just think of Angela, whose description of getting her car out of her parking lot is just terrible:

I quickly discovered, the only effective way to remove the ice was to angrily chisel at it with my broken ice scraper.
