With the Green Line extension bringing the Green Line a lot closer to the square, it could happen. OK, in the far, far future, Cambridge Day reports.

Hmm
While I agree that it shouldn't be a priority, I think it makes sense to have Porter be the Green line terminus and another hub of the MBTA.
a very long term project
They were talking about extending the green line near where I grew up when I was a teenager. I'm 42 now and Lechmere is still the last stop.
It would be nice if E line
It would be nice if E line service would get restored, also offering better transferring and commuter rail connections.
Red/Blue connection????
That article also states:
"Plans to extend the blue line 1,500 feet to meet the red line at the Charles/MGH stop in Boston are under way, with environmental reviews and final designs to be complete by Dec. 31, 2011."

The key is the word "plans"
T officials have said that even though they have no money to extend the Blue Line, and are not expecting any any time soon, they continue to pay for planning, just in case.
The linked story does make
The linked story does make clear they have to plan for Red/Blue as part of the last change to the mitigation agreement with CLF for the Big Dig. They would have to yet again reopen and change the mitigation agreement if they don't want to finish the design work for Red/Blue.
