Its illegal to have a gas grill above a first floor deck. Good luck collecting on the insurance......

Because this building is a condo, I wonder how this plays out.. It could be that the condo association is the name on the policy covering external fire damage. And each occupant would have insurance for the contents of their apartments. The association would receive the bills for the roof repair... if they couldn't collect insurance would they have to sue the owner of the illegal grill?

4 alarm and it looks like the building might be a total loss, not to mention water and smoke damage to adjoining buildings and condos.......gonna get messy.

Every time I go to the observation deck in Prudential Tower, I'm always surprised by the number of grills on the rooftop decks: they're everywhere, and this is an affluent neighborhood with well-educated residents.

Getting all these grills off the decks and balconies can be difficult. I had to threaten to call Inspectional Services and the Fire Department to get the grill off one of the balconies in my building.

I didn't report the grill, but we had a surprise inspection from our insurance company and they told us flat out to get the grill (my neighbor's)off the roof or we lose our insurance. That gets people's attention.

This goes back a long time but when I was a condo commando, the insurance company allowed rooftop (not balcony, only rooftop) grills as long as there was no open flame. So this meant electric grills were allowed. Hard to find, but we bought one, and the residents lived happily ever after, without causing a fire or policy cancellation.

George Forman Grills For Everyone!! We'll all be grilling faster, easier and healthier!
(Side effects may include hair loss, naming all your children the same thing, having Ali whup your ass and shilling for muffler shops. If you experience infomercials lasting more than an hour, see your doctor.)

Electric is ok - as far as I know with the city as well. It's the open flame they don't want - but hard to beat the taste of gas or charcoal!

Never heard gas marketed as tasty, outside of Arlen, Texas anyway.

The electric grill actually worked nicely (and no they were not Foremans, they were full-sized, just like George himself)
