Make way for turtles
By adamg on Thu, 08/05/2010 - 10:38pm
Sarah Potts snapped a photo of the large turtle for whom State Police blocked off the outbound side of Storrow Drive this evening so that it could cross the road without being flattened.

Back away from the terrapin
So the Troopahs established a perimeter and allowed the turtle to make its way back to the lagoon on its own? Or did they eventually just pick it up and carry it? LOL That's a hoot!
They tried to pick it up
But, as Channel 7 reports, it was a snapping turtle and was having none of it, so they let it make its own way across, prodded at times by a DCR worker.
Snapping turtle
Then put on a pair of heavy duty work gloves and pick it up from the other end.
Do I have to come up with all the answers?

Well you are the trivia dork.
A snapping turtle that big is
A snapping turtle that big is might be able to take a couple of fingers off, even if you're wearing gloves.
Just pick it up!
My wife hates when I've stopped traffic to carry a turtle across the road. Big or not though, you can pick up or move a snapper without getting hurt if you do it right. It's not that hard.
different option
My mother carries an empty cooler in the car for the express purpose of transporting snapping turtles from the road off to the side for safety.
Save the turtles!
I'm sure I'm not the only cyclist that saves turtles in the road anytime they see one. Just yesterday, I moved a snapper, but much smaller than this one. Man, that's a big 'un.
Yer not the only one
Get them mid shell and they can't get to ya. Oh, hell will they try ... but they won't. I learned from our neighbor when we lived in Littleton, and I've probably shuttled five or six off the roads over the years.
That one is probably beyond my ability to lift and control though ... hoooo-yah!
