Bicycle riders

Bicycle riders in this city are obnoxious, weaving in and out of traffic. It also caused a huge traffic jam and it took me 45 minutes to get down Melnea Cass Boulevard. Cyclists should only use bike paths, the roads were made for cars!

Morning rush hour in the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. Streets look like this when 33% of all trips are made by bicycle.

planning and investment in cycling infrastructure makes it a safe option. research shows that its important cyclists feel safe. separating them from motor traffic does that.

Not the Lea I was thinking of, but damn that was a good song. I always associate it with "94.5 WCOZ...KickASS Rock-n-Roll!" That song and the Fisher Zed song, "So Long."
(Principally I was trying to throw a non sequitur out there to derail the inevitable and unending bicycle tirades.)
Good.

Did you know Melnea Cass was almost a full-fledged elevated highway?
But it's not. So, tomorrow, I hope it takes you 3 hours to drive down it. By the way, the roads were made for horses. Bikes came next. Cars were last to the party. You're the rookie, rookie. Ever been the new guy at a company who has to deal with all the crap until a new rookie comes along? Yeah, that's you, car driver. Deal with it.
Whinonymous Should Get on the Freeway

Didn't Boston Biker have a funny take on this mentality? Something like "all those cars should just stay on the freeways because those were built for them".
Meanwhile, on the Longfellow bridge where the inbound bike lane is closed, bikes were grouping up waiting for the light. Two motorcycles and eight bikes took the same space as one car. That's a tenfold increase in vehicle capacity. So, who is causing a traffic jam again? Maybe all those people taking up 10x the space they should? When are they going to start ticketing drivers for participating in these critical mass drives that block all the roadways?
As Kaz just pointed out: get off my asphalt, whippersnapper! Those roads were paved because cyclists held a Good Roads campaign and doncha ferget it!
Meanwhile

with your idiotic "logic" you could argue that 30 pedestrians could fill that same place that only ten bikes filled, so maybe everyone should be on foot? Get off MY asphalt, girl, til you come up with something intelligent, or at least interesting to say.

That you were but a little brat chewing lead paint chips, filling diapers, and/or just getting on your first tricycle when I started riding these streets, I think "get off my road" goes the other way around.

should be shut down for the length of time both Melina Cass Boulevard and the off ramps from I-93 were last night just for a crash investigation, no matter how serious it was. Clear the wreck, get the traffic moving, and do your post-crash investigating in the middle of the night when far fewer people will need to be diverted.
But I guess the fact a cyclist was involved somehow justifies the added delays and pollution that resulted from the extended closure.

Go take some pictures of P-town with a hipstamatic. That would be original.

Roadman:
As for the ludicrous suggestion by others that bikes somehow don't belong in this location, look at a map, and see whether you can come up with an alternative route for bikes between the South Bay and South End. Don't bother to suggest something that involves significantly lengthening the route. Only cars are suitable for that kind of routing. The reason for the bottle neck during the investigation is that there is no other viable route connecting these two areas, whether you are in a car, on a bicycle, or walking.

cyclists in general by my comments. However, it has been my impression that the post-crash investigations tend to take much longer when there is a pedestrian or cyclist involved. Yes, there may be a good reason for this, so I won't argue your point about the judgment of public safety officials.
And I do agree with you that the comments posted by others that cyclists shouldn't be riding in this area are way off base.

if there is a potential that someone could die. For obvious reasons, crashes that involve pedestrians and cyclists tend to involve more serious injuries that lead to deaths.
They can take a lot of the measurments at a later time, but they need to photograph everything that is at the scene before they can do that. And obviously they have to mark where everything is before so they can take measurments later.

they're not in a car, it's the difference between a fender bender and vehicular homicide-- if someone is on their way to the hospital with serious injuries there is going to be a more detailed investigation, no matter what mode they were using

Car drivers in this city are obnoxious; running red lights, flying through stop signs, killing pedestrians and bikers in crosswalks. They cause huge traffic jams resulting in hours of delay. Car drivers should move at speed limits, not hit people with their cars and at least pretend to be a responsible driver.

When my dear friend, first love, and high school sweetheart comes out of his coma - IF he comes out of the coma - I will make sure to tell him how badly he inconvenienced you, although I'm afraid he may not understand me, as they really don't have any idea at this point what kind of cognitive function he will recover. He has a punctured lung, a broken clavicle, and severe head trauma, and the doctor says we should not expect to get back the man he was before the accident. You lost 45 minutes of your day. His family, friends, and I have most likely lost the Eric we knew. Perhaps you could be a little more sensitive.

Thank you for saying what I don't have the strength to write at the moment. I spent the day in the hospital waiting area awaiting his family's arrival. Eric's prognosis is not good and we are all praying for his recovery. Now is not the time to place blame on the driver of the car, Eric or any other cyclist. A son, brother, uncle and dear friend is suffering along with his family. Now is the time to pray for him and anyone else who is in pain or may be suffering. A soul needs our love, prayers and support. Use your energies and send good wishes to him and his family and NOT to judge or criticize.

if drivers actually followed the rules of driving, stop trying to race the lights, making illegal turns, and talking on cell phones and not paying attention then there would be less accidents.... how is it a biker or someone walking across the streets fault when they get hit by a car.... so tell me what happened to the driver? the biker is in critical condition and you have a never to be blaming him..... what a creep

Hey "Anon" you cowardly, insensitive piece of $h1t. I'm sorry it took you 45 extra minutes to get home to your room in your parents' basement. I knew the victim in this accident and he passed away this weekend. Your life is obviously more important though.
