Jeff Egnaczyk took this photo early this morning:
I heard a boom, looked over and saw the truck crashing on its side.
WBZ-TV reports that three people were hurt (and the commute made a complete mess) when a truck apparently tried to beat a trolley at Charles and Beacon around 6:45 a.m.

up until this morning, I was usually on the C-Line going through Coolidge Corner at about that time.
My commute this morning (all 3 hours of it. It's only for 9 days, thank you god) seems like a dream.

My sentiments exactly. I hope the driver wasn't injured in the accident, but I sure hope he feels pain for it after the fact. What a moronic, selfish thing to do.
It's agreed.

Lazy, too, to boot!!. The driver of the truck was a jerk of the First Order.
Gates

They really should install railroad crossing gates like the ones used for the commuter rail/Amtrak lines where the Green Line tracks cross major roads. For one thing it will make the trolleys go so much faster if they always have right of way. The other thing is that it will keep buffoons like this off the tracks when they're not supposed to be there.
Good idea, but ...

Here's what would happen:
Idiots would try to beat the gates and would quickly break them in two (think of the Allston/Cambridge tolls).
The T would grow tired of maintaining the gates and so simply stop replacing them.
An idiot in, oh, a flatbed truck, would try to beat the trolley and would lose.
And so the cycle of life would continue.
I agree.

Either that, or totally disallow left turns where the Green Line Tracks cross major roads/streets. So what if drivers end up having to take a little longer to get to where they're going.

Unfortunately, three people on the train were injured, as was the driver of the truck, plus there was a diesel fuel leak from the truck, in addition to that, which had to be cleaned up.
The fact that there presently aren't any fuctioning traffic signals on a lot of these dangerous intersections is a big part of the problem. Also, it's the problem of people refusing to yield to the MBTA train, which has the right of way.
Better still, maybe left turns should be disallowed in such intersections.
