Another MBTA bus crash sends six to hospital, in Dedham

AlertNewEngland reports a 34E bus and a car collided outside the Stop & Shop at the Dedham Mall around 3:20 p.m. Five bus passengers and the driver of the car were taken to local hospitals with minor neck and back injuries.

The T reports the driver of the car was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign, and that the bus suffered minor damage to the right side; the auto moderate damage to the front.

"Neck and back injuries" = Fakers.

"Neck and back injuries" = Payday.

First thing you do at a bus accident = don't let anyone on or off, or you'll have a hundred more neck and back injury claims than you had actual riders.

This is not a town of decent people.

Now, I'm not from Dedham, but I can't imagine that they will appreciate being called of indecent people who will line up at a crashed bus so they can sue them.

My bad. I was thinking of Boston.

was this country.

Besides that, the 34E is a long route that probably has very few Dedham residents.

I really only have one thing on my bucket list: To ride the 34E from Forest Hills all the way to Walpole. One of these years ....

Adam,

If you ever do this, consider a UH 'bus crawl'. You and what, 49 UH groupies take that bus from the Hills to Walpole. I think it'd be a good time.

You know you want to make it happen.

Imagine having to drive that route? ((shudders))

Pretty much a straight line on a wide and largely uncongested road. I'd much rather drive the 34E than something like the 8 or 47 or 66 -- crazy turns, narrow streets, thick traffic, pedestrians crossing everywhere, people getting on and off at almost every stop.

Where you've got to deal with a variety of turns and curves just down from Washington Street, dual four-way stops (which continue to give Massachusetts drivers problems, since we've only had them for 20 years or so now) and a fair number of tight turns around a parking lot full of Massholes and crazed Massholes-turned-pedestrians.

Just because that's a prime target for scamming doesn't mean that there are no legitimate neck and back injuries.

A car I was in basically got love tapped when I was 15 and I couldn't turn my head for two days. I'd rather be safe than sorry as far as checking it out, IMHO.

I have no details on this crash but, as a pedestrian in Boston I can tell you: MBTA bus drivers scare me. I would never step off a curb when the light is yellow with a T bus nearby. Even after it has been red for a little while, you should always expect that T bus to keep on going through the light.

In this case, the bus was stopped and it was rear ended by the automobile. Hardly the bus driver's fault...

Over the years the Dedham Mall has expanded and had many adjacent free standing buildings built next to it. There is in effect a large intersection where many of the parking lots exit into an internal mall road.

At best this is a busy, confusing parking lot. When you add the too frequent aggressive driver into the mix, it's a recipe for frequent accidnts.

I can't imagine how one can hit an MBTA bus in the middle of the day. It's akin to hitting the broadside of a barn.

As to the number of people sent to the hospital, I would imagine that it's standard procedure in such an accident for authorities to encourage passengers to get checked out.

The car ran a stop sign and hit the side of the bus.

I actually saw that accident yesterday while getting gas, and it looked awful. The "car" was a Jeep Cherokee and the entire front, from the windshield to the front bumper, had been basically ripped off. The bus was all banged up and a few of the windows were smashed. I think that "only" neck and back injuries are lucky, considering the damage.

I think they're especially lucky considering that there are no seatbelts on a bus. You're pretty vulnerable to being thrown around.
