I remember the Angels in the eighties. They used to ride the T and I think their presence made a difference.Today I am not sure what they can do to stop all the shooting going on in the hood. God knows the police aren't getting it done.I think it was nice that "a homely woman with a pale complexion and wire-rimmed glasses that really didn’t go with her bead-and-feather motif" was nice enough to care about a stranger on the Common. It was nice of you to offer the man a ride to the shelter, but not in your van (or do you call it a bus, tv style?)Im looking forward to your next post. I just hope its not my Granny! If it is and she wakes up just as you are pulling up I will tell her to pretend to be unconcious and I will stay out of your way and not ask any stupid questions.

The decision to call for a shelter van wasn't mine; rather, the city has strict protocols for this kind of thing. If the person is urgently sick, he goes by city ambulance to an emergency department. If he has a chronic condition, and wants to be treated at a hospital with no emergency department, he must go in a private (commercial) ambulance. If he isn't sick, and merely needs a place to sleep, he goes to a shelter in a shelter van. If a shelter van isn't available for some reason, then the police may transport him. Under no circumstances, however, is a city ambulance crew permitted to transport a homeless person directly to a shelter. I didn't make up that rule.

As for the person who "was nice enough to care about a stranger on the common," you've missed the point of my post entirely. I applaud people who care about others. Believe it or not, I care about people, too. For every call I describe in my blog, there are ten others that I don't describe, calls where the patient has a legitimate medical problem, where I provide compassionate treatment. I rarely blog about those situations, though, because there's nothing unusual or interesting about them.

What you don't seem to understand is that the city has a finite number of ambulances. You don't have to be dying or unconscious to call 911, but you really should be at least a little bit sick. How would you feel if you called 911 for your Granny, and there was no ambulance to respond, because they were all busy checking on people who'd never wanted any help in the first place? Pretty furious, I'll bet. And sadly, this isn't hysteria on my part. It happens right here in Boston each and every day.

You sound like the same person who complained about my posts a week or so ago--the person who didn't understand that I'm not the one who posts on UniversalHub, but rather, UniversalHub posts excerpts from my blog. You referred to your "Granny" then, and again now. Everybody else seems to understand what I'm saying. Why don't you?

I just don't like your holier then thou attitiude. You don't seem to like people. You make comments about people being animals. You act surprised when a hispanic woman holds a child in a loving way. I think you are one of those guys that gets off on being Mr Ambulance Driver and for some reason it gets under my skin.Ok?Rich?

bostnkid, I think you seem to be projecting issues that you have about society in general onto this one blogger? Your interpretation of his post is very narrow-minded.

Holier THAN thou? I looked over the TS blog, and see someone who spends all day, every day, helping people whether they want it or not, and sometimes if HE wants to or not.
How frustrating must it be for a cop who finds out someone committed a violent crime and got away while he was answering a fake 911 call? Or a firefighter called for the same non-emergency who finds out their truck is badly needed across town for a REAL fire? So why do you think TS would feel less frustrated when he gets called for yet another drunk or person who doesn't want to be helped in the first place, and finds out someone is bleeding to death several miles away?

What do you spend YOUR days doing, besides ragging on public servants?
