Thick black smoke billowed across Egleston Square from a fire that quickly went to three alarms and set the rubber roof on fire at 1953 Columbus Ave. around 2:30 p.m.
The Boston Fire Department blames "careless disposal of a cigaratte" on a third-floor porch and says one firefighter is now in the hospital with chest pains. Some 12 people are now without homes.
The department estimates the cost of that cigarette at $250,000.
Egleston Liquors broke out its water for the firefighters battling the blaze in today's scorching heat, Egleston Square Main Street reports.

The building is 1951-1955 not 1945 Columbus Ave. 1945 is the used car lot next door.
The physical therapy group in the basement is 1951, the door on Google Maps shows an address of 1953, and there's a second door to the left of that with more mailboxes/doorbells that I'm assuming is 1955.

That location is barely 2 blocks from the local fire station. How was the fire allowed to get that bad?

Before taking cheap shots, do a google map search of the location of the building and the firehouse. IT'S NOT NEXT TO THE FIREHOUSE. If you want to know how a fire gets that bad, flick a butt out your window and watch what happens.

I just went through by bike. Washington Street South to Columbus is way back jammed. Traffic routed to the Walgreens and back onto Columbus Avenue. I slowly snuck through a half dozen fire trucks and as many blue and whites and may five ambulances.
It is a place to avoid.
