About 5 years ago one or two dogs were killed by stray electrical current around manholes - apparently a conductive mixture of water and snow-melt salt had worked its way into the wires and provided a conductive path to the surface - and if I recall correctly the utility got on it right away and resolved the problem.

and it was still warm, no less than normal, but the manhole covers were not hot to the touch. A little warm, but not hot at all. They are made of some sort of plastic and don't really conduct heat very well. The smelly steam was gone though.

These manholes were designed this way so the homeless who get kicked out of Pine Street can sleep on them during the winter months. Thank God the MBTA has come through and designed bus shelters with heaters along the Silver Line where the homeless can hibernate for the winter.
