Doggie warnings go up around paw-burning manhole covers in the South End
By adamg on Mon, 09/12/2011 - 2:58pm
Complaining to the Mayor's Hotline gets results. Roving UHub photographer Sean Connor forwarded this photo today of the excessively hot manhole covers on Harrison Avenue, a day after somebody complained one had burned his or her pet's paws.

Have you seen the other Greenway signs
About the rats being on a diet?

I've got to give the utilities some credit
About 5 years ago one or two dogs were killed by stray electrical current around manholes - apparently a conductive mixture of water and snow-melt salt had worked its way into the wires and provided a conductive path to the surface - and if I recall correctly the utility got on it right away and resolved the problem.

Stray electrical current vs. dogs
As a memorable NY Post headline labeled the situation, "Shock and Paw".
I walked over that today
and it was still warm, no less than normal, but the manhole covers were not hot to the touch. A little warm, but not hot at all. They are made of some sort of plastic and don't really conduct heat very well. The smelly steam was gone though.
HOMELESS HEATERS
These manholes were designed this way so the homeless who get kicked out of Pine Street can sleep on them during the winter months. Thank God the MBTA has come through and designed bus shelters with heaters along the Silver Line where the homeless can hibernate for the winter.
